Written by: Jay H.

A slow internet connection can be one of the most frustrating problems to deal with whether you’re working from home, streaming a movie, or just browsing the web. Pages load slowly, videos buffer endlessly, and everything takes longer than it should. If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Why is my internet so slow?”, you’re not alone.

Let’s break down the possible causes of slow internet, how to test your current speed, and what you can do to fix it.

Step 1: Test Your Internet Speed

Before making any changes, it’s important to get a clear picture of your current connection.

How to Run a Speed Test

Visit a reputable speed test website such as fast.com. The test will start running immediately for your download speed. Once it finishes, click on Show more info to get your upload speed.

What the Numbers Mean

Download speed – Affects things like streaming, browsing, and downloads.

Upload speed – Important for video calls, file uploads, and online gaming.

Ping (ms) – Measures delay. Lower is better; high ping can make your connection feel laggy.

Compare your results with the speeds promised by your internet provider by checking your online account or an invoice. If you’re paying for 100 Mbps but only getting 15 Mbps, something’s off.

Common Reasons for Slow Internet

1. Too Many Devices Connected

Every device on your network uses a slice of your bandwidth. Phones, smart TVs, gaming consoles, and even smart home gadgets can add up. If too many are active at once, everything slows down.

Fix: Disconnect unused devices or upgrade your internet plan if you have a large household.

2. Weak Wi-Fi Signal

The farther away you are from your router, the weaker the signal. Walls, furniture, and other electronics can also interfere. If possible, always use a wired (ethernet) connection over a wireless connection as they are more reliable and provide better speeds.

Fix: Move closer to your router or consider getting a mesh Wi-Fi system or signal extender to improve coverage. Use a wired connection if possible.

3. Outdated Equipment

Old routers and modems may not support faster speeds, especially if you’ve upgraded your plan but kept the same hardware.

Fix: Upgrade to a modern router that supports current Wi-Fi standards (look for dual-band or Wi-Fi 6 models).

4. Your Internet Plan Isn’t Fast Enough

If you’re consistently hitting the maximum of what your plan offers, you may simply need a faster package.

Fix: Check your plan’s speed and consider upgrading if your needs have increased, especially if you work from home, game, or stream videos.

7. ISP Issues

Sometimes the problem isn’t you, it’s your provider. Outages, maintenance, or technical issues at their end can reduce your speeds.

Fix: Check your provider’s website or social media for updates. If the issue persists, contact their support team.

Boost your Internet Speed

A slow internet connection doesn’t always mean you need a new provider. Often, it’s caused by minor issues that you can fix yourself. By testing your speed and working through the common culprits, you can enjoy a faster, smoother online experience.

Few things are more frustrating than pressing your power button and… nothing happens. No lights, no fans, no startup sounds—just silence. Whether you’re using a desktop or a laptop, a computer that won’t turn on can feel like a disaster, especially if you rely on it for work, school, or personal files.

Before you panic or assume the worst, there are several steps you can take to diagnose the issue. Many power problems have simple fixes. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you figure out what’s wrong and what you can do to get back up and running.

1. Check the Power Source

It sounds obvious, but it’s worth double-checking before anything else. Before assuming something is seriously wrong with your computer, start with the basics: make sure it’s actually receiving power. Many no-start issues are caused by loose cables, faulty outlets, or a simple power strip failure.

For Desktop Computers

Check the power cable
Ensure the power cord is securely plugged into both the back of your computer and a working wall outlet or surge protector. A loose connection is more common than you’d think.

Test the outlet
Try plugging another device, like a phone charger or lamp, into the same outlet to confirm it’s delivering power. If it doesn’t work, try a different outlet.

Inspect the power supply switch
On some desktops, there’s a small power switch on the back of the power supply unit. Make sure it’s switched to the “on” position.

Try another power bar or plug directly into the wall
Power strips can fail silently, even if their indicator light is on. To rule this out, bypass the power bar and plug your PC directly into the wall.

For Laptops

Connect the charger
Plug in your laptop charger and look for signs that it’s charging, like LED lights near the charging port or an on-screen battery icon.

Try another outlet
If there are no signs of life, move to another outlet just in case the one you’re using is faulty.

Test with another charger
If possible, try a different compatible charger. The problem might not be the laptop at all, it could be the charging cable or adapter.

2. Look for Signs of Life

Just because your screen stays black doesn’t always mean your computer is completely dead. Sometimes, your system may be receiving power but failing to boot properly. That’s why it’s important to look and listen for any signs that something is happening under the hood.

Check for Visual Indicators

Start by pressing the power button and observing the computer closely:

Power button lights up
Some devices have LED lights built into the power button or around the keyboard. If these light up, your computer is likely receiving power.

Keyboard backlighting
On laptops or desktops with backlit keyboards, lighting may briefly turn on when the system attempts to start.

Charging indicators
For laptops, a charging light near the power port or on the side of the device often confirms that it’s receiving power, even if the screen is blank.

Listen for Audible Clues

Sound is another helpful diagnostic tool. As your computer attempts to boot, listen for:

Whirring fans
If you hear fans spinning, that means power is reaching the internal components, but the system might be stuck in the boot process.

Hard drive or startup noises
Older computers with spinning hard drives often make faint clicking or spinning sounds when starting up.

Beeping noises
Some desktops emit beeps when something is wrong during startup. These POST (Power-On Self-Test) beeps indicate hardware issues like bad RAM or a missing component. The pattern and number of beeps can help you pinpoint the problem (you can look these up on your computer manufacturer’s website).

3. Try a Hard Reset

If your computer is getting power—maybe the lights come on or the fans spin—but it still won’t start properly, it could be stuck due to a minor system glitch or hardware hiccup. In many cases, performing a hard reset can help clear out that temporary problem and allow your system to start fresh.

A hard reset essentially drains any remaining electrical charge from the computer and forces all internal components to fully power off. This can resolve issues related to unresponsive hardware, sleep mode malfunctions, or incomplete shutdowns.

How to Perform a Hard Reset on a Laptop

Disconnect the power
Unplug the charger from your laptop to ensure no electricity is flowing into the device.

Remove the battery (if it’s removable)
If your laptop has a removable battery, take it out. For newer laptops with built-in batteries, you can skip this step.

Hold the power button
Press and hold the power button for 15 to 20 seconds. This helps discharge any lingering power from internal components.

Reconnect and restart
Reinsert the battery (if you removed it), plug the charger back in, and try turning the laptop on again.

Note: If your laptop has a built-in battery that you can’t remove, just hold the power button down for a longer period—sometimes up to 30 seconds—and then try turning it back on.

How to Perform a Hard Reset on a Desktop

Unplug the computer
Disconnect the power cable completely from the wall and the computer itself.

Discharge residual power
Press and hold the power button for 15 to 20 seconds. This releases any remaining charge inside the system.

Reconnect and restart
Plug the power cable back in and press the power button to see if the system starts up normally.

5. Listen for Beeping or Error Codes

Some computers will beep in specific patterns when there’s a hardware issue (like bad RAM or graphics card). These POST (Power-On Self-Test) beeps can help diagnose the issue. If you hear beeps, refer to your computer manufacturer’s website or manual to interpret them.

6. Test the Battery and Charger (Laptops Only)

A dead battery or faulty charger may prevent your laptop from turning on.

Try removing the battery entirely and powering the laptop with just the charger.

If it powers on, the battery may be the issue.

If not, the charger might be faulty—try a known working charger if available.

7. Disconnect All External Devices

A malfunctioning USB device, printer, or external hard drive can occasionally prevent startup. Unplug everything from your computer (except for the monitor, keyboard, and mouse if it’s a desktop). Try powering it on again. If it works, reconnect devices one by one to identify the problem device.

8. Check for Internal Hardware Issues (Advanced)

If you’re comfortable opening your desktop case:

A slow website can frustrate users, hurt your SEO rankings, and even impact your sales or conversions. Speeding up your WordPress site not only improves user experience but also ensures better performance and higher visibility in search engines. Here’s how you can optimize your WordPress website for speed.

How to Speed Up Your WordPress Website

1. Choose a Reliable Hosting Provider

Your hosting service plays a crucial role in your website’s speed.

Basic web hosting plans often significantly limit bandwidth, which can lead to slower loading times and interruptions during high-traffic periods. A fast and reliable hosting environment ensures your website performs well under heavy traffic. Design2Web IT offers 100% managed web hosting for small and medium businesses. Whether you have simple website or a complex website with thousands of pages and multiple databases, we can host them for you. Our web hosting includes a Content Delivery Network (CDN) to boost your website’s loading speed across the world, as well as daily website and database backups.

Low-cost hosting plans may seem attractive, but they often compromise on speed, support, and uptime reliability. Investing in quality hosting such as Design2Web IT ensures faster response times, reduced downtime, and a smoother experience for your visitors.

2. Use a Lightweight Theme and Design

Heavy themes packed with unnecessary features can slow down your site. Choose a theme designed for speed, like Astra, GeneratePress, or Neve. These themes offer customisation without compromising performance.

Also, do not go overboard with complex layouts, animations, or design elements that add visual clutter but contribute little to functionality. A clean, minimalist design not only loads faster but also enhances user experience and navigability.

Stick to essential features and avoid excessive plugins or widgets that duplicate functionality already provided by your theme.

3. Optimise Images

Images often take up the bulk of a webpage’s load time. Compress your images using tools like TinyPNG, Imagify, or Smush. These plugins optimise images without reducing quality.

Also use the WebP format for smaller file sizes whether possible and set appropriate dimensions for images during uploads.

4. Implement Caching

Caching speeds up your site by storing a static version of your pages, reducing the load on your server and improving the loading speed for visitors. Install a caching plugin like:

WP Fastest Cache

W3 Total Cache

LiteSpeed Cache (if your hosting supports LiteSpeed servers)

These plugins simplify caching and help deliver content faster to your visitors.

5. Minify CSS, JavaScript, and HTML

Minifying reduces the size of your code by removing unnecessary spaces and comments. Plugins like Autoptimize or WP Rocket can handle this for you, improving loading speeds.

6. Use a Content Delivery Network (CDN)

A CDN stores copies of your site on servers around the world, delivering content from the server closest to your user. Cloudflare and Bunny.net are two popular CDN providers.

Design2Web IT provides a CDN with our web hosting plans to help your site deliver smoothly across the globe.

7. Optimize Your Database

Over time, your WordPress database accumulates unused data like post revisions, spam comments, and transients. Use plugins like WP-Optimize or Advanced Database Cleaner to clean and optimize your database regularly. However, always take a backup of your website and database before optimizing your database to ensure no data is lost.

8. Limit Plugins

Too many plugins can slow down your site and create security vulnerabilities. Audit your plugins regularly and remove those you no longer need to tighten your site’s security and reduce bloat. Also, use plugins from reputable developers to ensure the code’s quality.

9. Develop Your Site With a Mobile-First Approach

With the majority of web traffic coming from mobile devices, developing your site with a mobile-first approach is essential. Mobile-friendly websites are not only faster but also rank higher in search engine results.

Focus on creating a responsive design that adjusts seamlessly to different screen sizes. Use tools like Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test to ensure your site performs well across devices.

By optimising for mobile first, your site will deliver a faster, more enjoyable experience for users, regardless of their device.

10. Monitor Your Site’s Performance

Use tools like Google PageSpeed Insights or GTmetrix to identify bottlenecks and track improvements. These tools provide actionable recommendations to boost your site’s speed further.

Written by: Jay H.

In today’s connected world, staying online is often essential, whether for work, travel, or leisure. But what happens when you’re away from home or the office, and there’s no Wi-Fi available? That’s where your smartphone’s mobile hotspot feature can come in handy. Mobile hotspots let you share your phone’s data connection with other devices, providing internet access on the go. In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about using a mobile hotspot for seamless Wi-Fi access wherever you are.

What Is a Mobile Hotspot?

A mobile hotspot turns your smartphone into a mini Wi-Fi router, sharing its data connection with other devices like laptops, tablets, and other phones. By using cellular data, the hotspot gives internet access to any device connected to it, just as if they were connected to a traditional Wi-Fi network.

How to Use a Mobile Hotspot

Step 1: Check Your Mobile Data Plan

Before setting up a mobile hotspot, check your mobile plan:

Data Allowance: Mobile hotspots consume data quickly, so make sure you have a plan that accommodates your needs.

Hotspot Tethering: Some plans include hotspot access by default, while others may charge an additional fee or limit the amount of data that can be used for tethering.

Tip: If you plan to use a hotspot regularly, consider opting for a plan with a generous data cap.

Step 2: Enable Mobile Hotspot on Your Device

For iPhone Users

Open Settings: Go to Settings and select Personal Hotspot.

Turn on Allow Others to Join: Toggle the switch to allow other devices to connect.

Set Up Your Wi-Fi Password: To prevent unauthorized access, set a strong password by tapping on Wi-Fi Password and entering a secure passcode.

For Android Users

Open Settings: Go to Settings, then select Network & Internet (or Connections on some devices).

Tap on Hotspot & Tethering: From here, choose Wi-Fi Hotspot.

Turn on the Hotspot: Enable the hotspot toggle to activate it.

Set Up Hotspot Options: You can customize your network’s name (SSID) and password for security.

Step 3: Connect Devices to Your Mobile Hotspot

Once the mobile hotspot is enabled, other devices can connect to it like any standard Wi-Fi network:

Open Wi-Fi Settings on the Device: Go to the Wi-Fi settings on your laptop, tablet, or other device.

Select Your Mobile Hotspot Network: Choose the network name you set up in the previous step.

Enter the Password: Type in the hotspot password to connect.

Get Wi-Fi On The Go

A mobile hotspot is a valuable tool that can keep you connected on the go. By setting it up properly, managing data usage, and following best practices, you can enjoy reliable internet access wherever you are. Whether you’re travelling, working remotely, or facing a Wi-Fi outage, your mobile hotspot has you covered.

Why Factory Reset a Computer?

Before diving into the steps, here’s why a factory reset may be beneficial:

Troubleshooting Persistent Issues: If your computer has recurring software problems, such as freezing, crashing, or poor performance, a reset can help resolve these by restoring system stability.

Improving Performance: Over time, computers accumulate files, applications, and settings that can slow down performance. A factory reset removes this clutter.

Preparing for Resale or Donation: If you’re planning to give away or sell your computer, a factory reset ensures that all personal data is erased, protecting your privacy.

Note: A factory reset permanently erases all files and settings. Make sure to back up any important data before proceeding.

Step 1: Back Up Your Files

Before resetting, back up all essential files to an external hard drive, USB drive, or cloud storage (e.g., OneDrive or Google Drive). Factory resetting will erase everything, including installed programs and personal files.

Step 2: Access the Reset Option

Open Settings: Click the Start menu and select the Settings gear icon.

Go to Update & Security: In the Settings window, select Update & Security.

Select Recovery: From the left sidebar, choose Recovery.

Start the Reset: Under the Reset this PC section, click on Get started.

Step 3: Choose Reset Options

When you begin the reset process, you’ll have two options:

Keep my files: This option reinstalls Windows and removes all apps and settings but keeps your personal files.

Remove everything: This option deletes all files, apps, and settings, bringing your computer back to a completely clean state.

Tip: If you’re preparing the computer for a new user, select Remove everything for a full reset.

Step 4: Follow the Prompts

Confirm Reset Options: You’ll be asked to confirm your choice, and if you chose Remove everything, you’ll see an additional option to clean the drive.

Choose Clean Data (Optional): For added security, you can choose to Clean data instead of just removing files. This process takes longer but makes it harder to recover deleted files.

Begin the Reset: Click Next and then Reset to start the factory reset process.

Your computer will restart several times during this process. Once complete, it will boot up as a fresh Windows installation, allowing you to set it up as if it were new.

How to Factory Reset a Mac Computer

Step 1: Back Up Your Files

Use Time Machine (macOS’s built-in backup software) to save a copy of your files to an external drive, or back up files manually by transferring them to an external drive or cloud storage. Resetting a Mac will erase all files and settings.

Step 2: Sign Out of Accounts (Optional)

Signing out of accounts helps prevent any issues with apps that use your Apple ID.

Sign out of iCloud: Open System Preferences > Apple ID > Overview and click Sign Out.

Sign out of iMessage: Open Messages, select Messages > Preferences, go to the iMessage tab, and click Sign Out.

Sign out of iTunes: Open Music or Apple Music, go to Account > Sign Out.

Step 3: Restart in Recovery Mode

Shut Down the Mac: Click on the Apple menu in the top-left corner and select Shut Down.

Enter Recovery Mode: Turn on the Mac and immediately hold Command + R (or Command + Option + R for an internet recovery).

Select Disk Utility: In the macOS Utilities window, select Disk Utility.

Step 4: Erase the Hard Drive

Select Your Startup Disk: In Disk Utility, choose the main hard drive (often named Macintosh HD).

Click Erase: In the Disk Utility toolbar, select Erase. Choose APFS as the format for newer Macs or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for older systems.

Confirm Erase: Click Erase to wipe the disk. Once complete, close Disk Utility.

Step 5: Reinstall macOS

Return to macOS Utilities: After closing Disk Utility, select Reinstall macOS from the Utilities window.

Follow the Installation Prompts: Choose your hard drive and follow the prompts to install a fresh version of macOS.

When installation finishes, your Mac will restart as a new system, ready to be set up or handed over to a new user.

Creating a professional email signature can leave a lasting impression on clients, colleagues, and partners. An Outlook email signature can include your contact details, job title, social media links, and even your company logo, making your emails look polished and complete.

In this guide, we’ll show you step-by-step how to create a custom email signature in Outlook.

How to Set an Email Signature in Outlook

Step 1: Open Outlook Signature Settings

Open Outlook and click on File in the top-left corner.

Select Options from the menu to open the Outlook Options dialog box.

In the dialog, select Mail from the left sidebar.

Look for the Create or modify signatures for messages setting and click on the Signatures… button.

Step 2: Create Your Signature

Now that you’re in the signature editor, you can create your custom email signature.

Select “New” to create a new signature if you’re using the desktop app. Give your signature a name for easy identification.

In the text box, start entering the information you’d like to include in your signature, such as:

Full Name

Job Title

Company Name

Phone Number

Email Address

Website URL

Social Media Links

Company Logo or Profile Picture

Step 3: Format Your Signature

Outlook allows you to format your signature to make it look professional. Here’s how you can style it:

Change Font and Size: Highlight the text you’d like to change, then use the formatting toolbar to select the desired font, font size, and colour.

Add Links: To add hyperlinks (e.g., your website or social media profiles), select the text you want to link, click the Link (chain icon) in the editor, and enter the URL.

Insert an Image: Click on the Image icon in the editor (if available) to upload an image, like your company’s logo. Resize the image if needed for a balanced look.

Pro Tip: Stick to one or two colours that match your company’s branding for a cohesive look.

Step 4: Set Signature Defaults

After designing your signature, you can set when and where it appears automatically in your emails.

Choose Default Signature Settings:

In the desktop app, use the Choose default signature section to set when your signature is applied. You can select it for New messages and Replies/forwards.

In the web app, under Automatically include my signature on new messages that I compose and Automatically include my signature on messages I forward or reply to, check the boxes to apply your signature to all messages.

Manually Insert a Signature (Optional): If you prefer not to include your signature automatically, you can manually insert it. Simply click on Insert > Signature (desktop) or Insert signature in the message toolbar (web) to add it whenever needed.

Step 5: Save and Test Your Signature

Click OK in the desktop app or Save in the web app to apply your signature settings.

Send a Test Email: Open a new email, and check that your signature appears correctly. Send a test email to yourself to confirm that links and formatting are displaying properly.

Setting up an auto-reply in Outlook can help you manage your communication effectively, especially when you’re away from the office or unable to respond to emails promptly. Auto-replies, often used for vacation or out-of-office messages, inform senders of your absence and can provide them with alternative contact information. Here’s a how to set up auto-reply in any version of Outlook.

1. Using the Outlook Desktop Application

For Outlook 2016, 2019, and Microsoft 365

Open Outlook: Launch your Outlook application on your desktop.

Go to File: Click on the File tab located in the upper-left corner.

Select Automatic Replies (Out of Office):

Click on the Info tab on the left.

Choose Automatic Replies (Out of Office).

Turn on Automatic Replies:

In the Automatic Replies box, select Send automatic replies.

Optionally, you can check the Only send during this time range box to set a specific start and end time for your auto-reply. If you don’t set a time range, auto-replies will remain active until you turn them off.

Compose Your Message:

Under the Inside My Organization tab, write the message that will be sent to colleagues within your organisation.

If you want to send auto-replies to people outside your organization, switch to the Outside My Organization tab and compose a separate message for external contacts.

Click OK: Once you have finished writing your messages, click OK to activate your auto-reply.

For Outlook 2013

The steps are similar to the ones above, but instead of clicking on Automatic Replies (Out of Office) directly, you might need to navigate through File > Info and look for the option under the Account Information section.

2. Using Outlook on the Web

If you’re using Outlook on the web, follow these steps:

Sign in to Outlook Web App: Go to your Outlook account through your web browser.

Click on the Gear Icon: This is located in the top-right corner to open Settings.

Select View All Outlook Settings:

Scroll down and select View all Outlook settings at the bottom.

Go to Mail > Automatic Replies:

In the settings menu, click on Mail and then select Automatic replies.

Turn on Automatic Replies:

Toggle the Automatic replies on option to enable it.

You can set a time range for your auto-replies by checking the corresponding box.

Compose Your Message:

Write your auto-reply message in the provided text box.

You can also set a different message for senders outside your organization by checking the appropriate box and entering your message.

Save Changes: After you have composed your message, click Save to activate your auto-reply.

3. Using the Outlook Mobile App

Setting up an auto-reply in the Outlook mobile app is slightly different:

Open the Outlook App: Launch the Outlook app on your mobile device.

Go to Settings: Tap on your profile icon in the top-left corner and then tap on the gear icon to access Settings.

Select your Email Account: Tap on the email account for which you want to set up auto-replies.

Enable Automatic Replies:

Find the Automatic Replies option and toggle it on.

Optionally, set a time range for your replies.

Compose Your Message: Enter the message you want to send as an auto-reply.

Save Changes: After composing your message, tap on Save to activate the auto-reply feature.

Conclusion

Setting up an auto-reply in Outlook keeps your contacts informed when you are not available to respond to emails. If you are going on vacation, a break, or just taking some time away from your email, keep your contacts informed by quickly setting up an auto response in Outlook.

If you have difficulties setting an auto response in any version of Outlook, or are experiencing other computer-related issues, get in contact with one of our expert support technicians today.

As technology evolves, upgrading to new devices becomes a necessity for individuals and businesses alike. However, disposing of old IT equipment, such as computers, printers, and other electronic devices, requires careful consideration to ensure data security and environmental responsibility. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to securely dispose of outdated IT equipment.

Why Secure Disposal Matters

Data Security: Old devices may contain sensitive information, including personal data, financial records, and proprietary business information. Improper disposal can lead to data breaches and identity theft if bad actors get ahold of your equipment.

Environmental Impact: Electronic waste contains hazardous materials that can harm the environment if not disposed of correctly. Recycling and proper disposal help reduce pollution and the environmental impact.

Steps for Secure Disposal of IT Equipment

When disposing of IT equipment, it’s essential to follow specific guidelines for each type of device to ensure data security and proper recycling. Here’s a detailed breakdown for computers and laptops, printers and scanners, and mobile phones and tablets.

Computers and Laptops

Backup Important Data:

Connect an external storage device or use a cloud service to backup all important files, documents, and applications.

Ensure that the backup is complete and accessible before proceeding with data wiping.

Wipe Data from the Device:

Windows Computers:

Click the Windows icon in the bottom-left corner.

Search for and click on “Reset this PC“.

In the new dialog under Reset this PC, click Get started.

Choose to remove all personal files and reinstall Windows.

Mac Computers:

Use Disk Utility to erase the hard drive securely.

On Macs with Apple Silicon:

When starting your Mac, press and continue to hold the power button until you see the startup options. Select Options, then click Continue.

Provide an administrator user and Apple ID used on this Mac and enter the passwords if requested. Choose Disk Utility and Continue.

If you have previously created any volumes that are not named Macintosh HD, or Macintosh HD – Data, delete those first by selecting them and clicking the delete volume (-) button.

Then, select and delete Macintosh HD by clicking the Erase button.

Follow the prompts to confirm you want to erase your Mac and restart.

On Intel-based Macs:

When starting your Mac, press and release the power button, then immediately press and hold the Command (⌘) and R keys simultaneously. Keep holding until you see the Apple logo or spinning globe.

If prompted, enter the password for an admin account. Then, choose Disk Utility from the utilities menu.

In Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD from the tool and select Erase and confirm the Erase in the new window.

Remove and Destroy Hard Drives (If Necessary):

Open the computer case and locate the hard drive.

Use a screwdriver to remove the hard drive from its slot.

Physically destroy the hard drive by drilling holes through it, using a hard drive shredder, or employing a degausser to scramble the data.

Recycle or Donate Responsibly:

Recycle:

Find certified e-waste recycling centres in your area. These centres adhere to strict environmental standards for disposing of electronic waste.

Some options in Canada include Staples, London Drugs, and many local recycling depots.

Check if the manufacturer or retailer offers a take-back or recycling program.

Donate:

If the device is still functional, consider donating it to schools, non-profits, or community organisations in need. Otherwise, posting the device on Facebook Marketplace or an equivalent marketplace is an easy way to get rid of unneeded tech.

Ensure that the device is still fully operational and meets the recipient’s needs.

Printers and Scanners

Remove Any Stored Documents or Faxes:

Check the printer or scanner’s memory for any stored documents or faxes and delete them.

For multifunction devices, ensure that all functions (fax, scan, copy) have been cleared.

Reset to Factory Settings:

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions provided in the manual or online to reset the device to its factory settings. This process clears all stored data and settings.

Recycle Through Electronic Recycling Programs:

Find local electronic recycling programs that accept printers and scanners.

Many office supply stores, such as Staples, and manufacturers offer recycling services for these devices.

Mobile Phones and Tablets

Backup Important Data:

Use cloud services or connect to a computer to backup all important data, such as contacts, photos, and documents.

Ensure that the backup is complete and accessible before wiping the device.

BitLocker is a powerful encryption feature included with certain versions of Windows that helps protect data by encrypting entire volumes. Enabling BitLocker on your Windows device ensures that your sensitive information is secure, even if the device is lost or stolen. Let’s go through the steps to enable BitLocker encryption on your Windows device.

What is BitLocker?

BitLocker is a built-in security feature available in certain editions of Windows, such as Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, and Education, as well as Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise. It helps protect your data by encrypting the entire drive on your computer, making it unreadable to unauthorized users. So if someone were to steal your desktop computer or laptop and attempt to read the hard drive, they would be unable to do so without the decryption key.

Why Should You Use BitLocker?

BitLocker is a feature that protects the data on your computer by encrypting it, making it unreadable to unauthorized users. Here are some simple reasons why you should use BitLocker:

1. Protect Sensitive Information

We all store important information on our computers, like personal photos, financial documents, and work files. If your computer gets lost or stolen, someone could access this information. BitLocker keeps your data safe by making it unreadable to others.

2. Prevent Identity Theft

Identity theft happens when someone steals your personal information and uses it to commit fraud. Your computer might have documents, saved passwords, company files, or other personal details that identity thieves want. BitLocker encrypts your data, making it much harder for criminals to use it.

3. Comply with Regulations

For businesses and professionals, BitLocker helps you follow data protection laws. Many industries have rules about how to protect sensitive data. BitLocker makes it easy to meet these rules and keep your data secure.

4. Ease of Use

BitLocker is easy to use. You don’t need to be a tech expert to set it up. The setup process is simple, and once BitLocker is on, it works in the background. You just unlock your drive with a password or a key, and your data stays safe.

Prerequisites for Enabling BitLocker

Before you begin, ensure the following prerequisites are met:

Windows Version: BitLocker is available on Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions, as well as corresponding versions of Windows 11. It is not available on Windows Home editions.

TPM (Trusted Platform Module): While BitLocker can be used without a TPM, it is recommended for enhanced security. Most modern devices come with TPM 1.2 or later.

Administrator Access: You must have administrator privileges to enable BitLocker.

Step-by-Step Guide to Enable BitLocker Encryption

Step 1: Access BitLocker Management

1. Open Control Panel:

Press Windows Key and search for and select “Control Panel”.

2. Navigate to BitLocker:

In the Control Panel, go to BitLocker Drive Encryption.

Bitlocker Drive Encryption in the Control Panel in Windows 10

Step 2: Turn On BitLocker

1. Select the Drive to Encrypt:

In the BitLocker Drive Encryption window, you will see a list of available drives.

Click on Turn on BitLocker next to the drive you want to encrypt (usually the C: drive).

Turn on Bitlocker on the drive you would like to encrypt

2. Choose How to Unlock Your Drive:

You will be prompted to choose how you want to unlock your drive during startup.

If your device has a TPM, you can use TPM with a PIN or password.

If you do not have a TPM, you will need to use a password or a USB flash drive to unlock the drive.

3. Set a Password or Insert a USB Flash Drive:

If you choose to use a password, enter and confirm a strong password.

If you opt for a USB flash drive, insert the drive and follow the prompts to set it up as your unlock key.

Step 3: Backup Your Recovery Key

1. Choose a Backup Method:

BitLocker will generate a recovery key that you can use to access your data if you forget your password or lose your unlock key.

You can save the recovery key to your Microsoft account, a USB flash drive, a file on your computer, or print it out.

2. Store the Recovery Key Securely:

It is crucial to store the recovery key in a safe place, separate from the encrypted device.

Step 4: Choose the Encryption Method and Mode

1. Select Encryption Method:

BitLocker offers two encryption options: Encrypt used disk space only (faster and suitable for new PCs) or Encrypt entire drive (more secure for PCs already in use).

2. Choose Encryption Mode:

For Windows 10 version 1511 and later, you can choose between New encryption mode (XTS-AES) and Compatible mode (AES-CBC). Select the mode based on your compatibility needs. New encryption mode is appropriate in most cases.

Step 5: Start Encryption

1. Begin the Encryption Process:

Click on Start encrypting to begin the encryption process.

The time required to complete encryption depends on the size of the drive and the amount of data stored on it.

2. Monitor Progress:

You can monitor the encryption progress in the BitLocker Drive Encryption window.

Once the encryption process is complete, you will receive a notification.
