System Restore is a useful tool in Windows that helps you revert your computer’s system files, settings, and applications to a previous state. If you’re experiencing unexpected errors or performance issues, using System Restore can often fix them without affecting your personal files. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about System Restore, from setting it up to restoring your system.

What Is System Restore?

System Restore is a Windows feature that creates “restore points” — snapshots of your system’s configuration at a particular point in time. Restore points save system files, installed applications, Windows Registry settings, and system settings. When something goes wrong, such as a problematic update or software installation, you can revert to one of these restore points, effectively undoing the recent changes that caused issues.

When Should You Use System Restore?

System Restore is useful in several situations, including:

After installing new software or hardware that’s causing errors.

Following a Windows update that has led to system instability.

When experiencing crashes, freezes, or unexpected shutdowns.

When dealing with corrupted system files or configuration issues.

How to Set Up System Restore

To use System Restore, it needs to be enabled first. Here’s how to check if it’s enabled on your Windows computer and set it up if it isn’t.

1. Open System Protection

Right-click the Start button and select System.

In the System window, click System Protection on the left-hand side.

2. Enable System Protection

In the System Protection tab, you’ll see a list of drives with a Protection status.

If Protection is set to Off for your main drive (usually C:), select the drive and click Configure.

In the Configure menu, select Turn on system protection and adjust the Max Usage slider to set the amount of disk space for restore points.

Click Apply and then OK to save changes.

3. Create a Restore Point

Although Windows automatically creates restore points, you can create one manually.

In the System Protection tab, click Create and give your restore point a descriptive name, like “Before Driver Update.”

Click Create again, and wait for the restore point to be generated.

How to Use System Restore to Revert Your System

If an error occurs, follow these steps to revert your system using System Restore.

Step 1: Open System Restore

Open the Start menu, type System Restore, and select Create a restore point.

In the System Properties window, click System Restore.

Step 2: Choose a Restore Point

In the System Restore window, click Next to see a list of available restore points.

Select a restore point from a date when your system was functioning properly.

If available, select Show more restore points to see older options.

Click Next after choosing your preferred restore point.

Step 3: Confirm Restore Point

Review the details of the selected restore point and click Finish to confirm.

Windows will restart your computer to apply the changes, which may take several minutes.

Step 4: Wait for the Process to Complete

After your computer restarts, you’ll see a message confirming that the restore was successful or failed. If successful, your system settings will be rolled back to the selected date, potentially resolving the error.

Advanced Options and Tips for System Restore

Undoing a System Restore

If the restore doesn’t fix the issue or creates new problems, you can undo it by returning to System Restore and selecting Undo System Restore. This will revert your system to its previous state before the restoration.

Choosing Restore Points Wisely

If multiple restore points are available, choose the one closest to when your system was stable, but before any problematic changes were made. Each restore point will show the date, time, and a description, which can help you identify the best option.

Running System Restore in Safe Mode

If Windows won’t start normally, you can run System Restore in Safe Mode:

Restart your computer and press F8 (or Shift + F8) repeatedly during startup.

Choose Safe Mode from the Advanced Boot Options.

Once in Safe Mode, follow the same steps to access and run System Restore.

Using Command Prompt for System Restore

If you cannot access Windows normally or through Safe Mode, you can perform a restore via Command Prompt:

Boot into the Windows Recovery Environment by pressing F8 on startup or using a Windows installation media.

Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.

In Command Prompt, type
rstrui.exe
and press Enter. This will open System Restore, allowing you to select a restore point.

Things to Keep in Mind

System Restore won’t delete your personal files (documents, photos, etc.), but it will remove software and updates installed after the restore point date.

System Restore doesn’t fix malware. If you suspect a virus or malware, use antivirus software to scan and clean your computer.

Restore points are automatically deleted if you run low on disk space, so it’s a good idea to check that System Protection is active periodically.

Get Your System in Working Order

System Restore is a valuable tool that can save you from complex troubleshooting steps and give you peace of mind. By following these instructions, you can roll back unwanted changes and restore stability to your system with ease.

This feature is great for Windows users who want a quick fix to system issues, but it is an advanced feature. If you have difficulties restoring your system or need further assistance, please contact one of our IT professionals now to assist with your technology needs.

Written by: Jay H.

Email forwarding is a helpful feature in Outlook that automatically redirects your incoming emails to another email address. It’s an efficient way to stay connected across multiple accounts or ensure that critical messages are accessible in one inbox. In this guide, we’ll cover how to set up email forwarding in both Outlook for Desktop and Outlook on the Web, so you can manage your emails more efficiently.

Why Set Up Email Forwarding in Outlook?

Here are a few scenarios where email forwarding can be especially useful:

Streamlining Multiple Accounts: Keep all your emails organized by sending them to a single primary email address.

Backup for Important Messages: Forwarding can serve as a backup to ensure no emails get lost.

Automatic Responses: If you’re temporarily away from an account, forwarding can help you receive and respond to critical emails.

How to Set Up Email Forwarding in Outlook for Desktop

If you use Outlook’s desktop application, here’s how to set up email forwarding.

Step 1: Open Outlook and Go to Rules

Open Outlook on your computer.

Go to the File tab in the top-left corner.

Select Manage Rules & Alerts.

Step 2: Create a New Rule

In the Rules and Alerts window, click New Rule.

Under Start from a blank rule, select Apply rule on messages I receive and click Next.

Step 3: Set Up the Conditions for Forwarding

To forward all emails, skip the condition selection and click Next (you will receive a prompt to confirm forwarding all emails).

If you only want specific emails forwarded, select conditions like from people or public group or with specific words in the subject and then click Next.

Step 4: Choose the Forwarding Action

Check the box for forward it to people or public group.

In the lower section, click the people or public group link, then enter the email address where you want to forward emails.

Click OK and then Next.

Step 5: Set Any Exceptions

You can set exceptions for emails you don’t want to forward, such as messages from specific senders or with certain words in the subject line. This step is optional, so if you don’t need exceptions, just click Next.

Step 6: Name Your Rule and Activate It

Give your rule a name, such as “Email Forwarding.”

Make sure Turn on this rule is checked.

Click Finish and then Apply to save the forwarding rule.

Note: Your computer needs to be on, and Outlook must be open for the desktop forwarding rule to work. If you want forwarding to work even when your computer is off, use the Outlook Web method instead.

How to Set Up Email Forwarding in Outlook on the Web

If you use Outlook on the Web (also known as Outlook.com or Office 365’s web version), follow these instructions.

Step 1: Log into Outlook on the Web

Go to Outlook.com and log into your account.

Step 2: Access the Settings Menu

In the top-right corner, click on the Settings gear icon.

At the bottom of the settings panel, click View all Outlook settings.

Step 3: Navigate to Mail Forwarding Settings

In the left-hand menu, select Mail.

Under Mail, go to Forwarding.

Step 4: Enable and Configure Email Forwarding

Check the box next to Enable forwarding.

Enter the email address you’d like to forward your messages to.

If you want to keep copies of forwarded emails in your Outlook inbox, check Keep a copy of forwarded messages. This option is handy if you want to access your emails from both accounts.

Step 5: Save Your Changes

Click Save at the bottom to apply your forwarding settings.

Troubleshooting Common Forwarding Issues

Forwarding Not Working: Ensure that your internet connection is stable and that your forwarding rule or setting is active. Also, double-check that you’ve entered the correct email address.

Emails Not Being Kept in Inbox: If you’re using Outlook on the Web and don’t see forwarded emails in your Outlook inbox, make sure the Keep a copy of forwarded messages box is checked.

Duplicated Emails: If you notice duplicate emails in your forwarded account, check for any existing rules that might also be forwarding emails to that address.

How to Stop Forwarding Emails in Outlook

If you no longer need email forwarding, it’s easy to disable it.

Outlook for Desktop

Go back to File > Manage Rules & Alerts.

Select the rule you created for forwarding and uncheck it to disable, or click Delete to remove it permanently.

Outlook on the Web

Go to Settings > View all Outlook settings > Mail > Forwarding.

Uncheck Enable forwarding and click Save.

Make Your Outlook More Productive

Email forwarding in Outlook is a practical way to simplify email management, keep backups, and stay connected wherever you are. By following these steps, you can set up forwarding on both Outlook desktop and web versions and enjoy the convenience of accessing emails from a single inbox.

Scheduling emails to send at a specific time can be a lifesaver, allowing you to stay organized, communicate more effectively, and plan your day efficiently. Whether you’re looking to send messages across time zones, avoid disturbing colleagues after hours, or simply ensure timely delivery, Outlook’s email scheduling feature makes it easy. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to schedule emails in Outlook to send later, with step-by-step instructions for both Outlook on Desktop and Outlook for Web.

How to Schedule Emails in Outlook for Desktop

If you’re using the Outlook desktop app (Outlook 365, Outlook 2019, 2016, or 2013), you can follow these steps to schedule your emails for later.

Step 1: Open a New Email

Launch Outlook on your computer.

Click on New Email in the upper-left corner to open a new message window.

Step 2: Compose Your Email

Write your email as usual:

Enter the Recipient(s): Add the email addresses of the people you want to send the email to.

Write the Subject and Body: Fill in the subject line and compose your email body.

Add Attachments: If necessary, attach any files or images to your email.

Step 3: Set the Send Later Time

With the email window open, go to the Options tab at the top.

In the Options toolbar, click Delay Delivery.

In the Properties window that appears, find the Delivery options section.

Check the box next to Do not deliver before and select the date and time you want the email to be sent.

Step 4: Confirm and Send

Once the date and time are set, click Close to exit the Properties window.

Back in the email composition window, click Send as you normally would.

The email will now be stored in your Outbox and sent automatically at the scheduled time.

Note: The Outlook app needs to be open for scheduled emails to be sent. If you close the app or shut down your computer, the email will remain in the Outbox until Outlook is reopened.

How to Schedule Emails in Outlook for Web

If you’re using Outlook on the Web (also known as Outlook.com or Office 365’s web version), the process is similar but with a few differences.

Step 1: Open a New Email in Outlook for Web

Go to Outlook.com and log into your account.

Click on New Message to start composing your email.

Step 2: Write Your Email

Just like the desktop version:

Add Recipient(s): Enter the email address(es) of your recipient(s).

Write the Subject and Body: Complete your email with the subject and message.

Attach Files: Add any attachments necessary for your message.

Step 3: Schedule the Send Time

At the bottom of the email window, next to the Send button, click the down arrow.

Select Send later from the dropdown menu.

A calendar popup will appear. Choose the date and time you want the email to be sent.

Once you’ve selected your desired send time, click Send.

The email will now be queued to send at the scheduled time and will be managed directly through Outlook’s servers, so you don’t need to keep your browser open.

Managing and Cancelling Scheduled Emails

After scheduling an email, you may want to review or cancel it before it’s sent. Here’s how:

For Outlook Desktop

Go to the Outbox folder on the left sidebar. Here, you’ll find all emails waiting to be sent.

Double-click the scheduled email you want to edit or delete.

To change the send time, return to Options > Delay Delivery and update the date and time.

If you want to cancel it entirely, delete the email from the Outbox.

For Outlook Web

Open your Drafts folder, where scheduled emails are saved until they’re sent.

Click on the email to open it.

You can adjust the content, change the scheduled time, or delete the email if you no longer wish to send it.

Note: You’ll find that scheduling from the web version is straightforward for those who regularly use multiple devices since the scheduled email syncs to your Outlook account and doesn’t rely on a single device being open.

Start Scheduling Your Outlook Emails

Scheduling emails in Outlook is an invaluable tool for effective communication, better productivity, and professional time management. Whether you’re using the Outlook desktop app or the web version, scheduling takes just a few steps and makes a significant difference in reaching recipients at optimal times. Try out this feature to streamline your workflow and make communication simpler and more strategic.

Creating a professional email signature can leave a lasting impression on clients, colleagues, and partners. An Outlook email signature can include your contact details, job title, social media links, and even your company logo, making your emails look polished and complete.

In this guide, we’ll show you step-by-step how to create a custom email signature in Outlook.

How to Set an Email Signature in Outlook

Step 1: Open Outlook Signature Settings

Open Outlook and click on File in the top-left corner.

Select Options from the menu to open the Outlook Options dialog box.

In the dialog, select Mail from the left sidebar.

Look for the Create or modify signatures for messages setting and click on the Signatures… button.

Step 2: Create Your Signature

Now that you’re in the signature editor, you can create your custom email signature.

Select “New” to create a new signature if you’re using the desktop app. Give your signature a name for easy identification.

In the text box, start entering the information you’d like to include in your signature, such as:

Full Name

Job Title

Company Name

Phone Number

Email Address

Website URL

Social Media Links

Company Logo or Profile Picture

Step 3: Format Your Signature

Outlook allows you to format your signature to make it look professional. Here’s how you can style it:

Change Font and Size: Highlight the text you’d like to change, then use the formatting toolbar to select the desired font, font size, and colour.

Add Links: To add hyperlinks (e.g., your website or social media profiles), select the text you want to link, click the Link (chain icon) in the editor, and enter the URL.

Insert an Image: Click on the Image icon in the editor (if available) to upload an image, like your company’s logo. Resize the image if needed for a balanced look.

Pro Tip: Stick to one or two colours that match your company’s branding for a cohesive look.

Step 4: Set Signature Defaults

After designing your signature, you can set when and where it appears automatically in your emails.

Choose Default Signature Settings:

In the desktop app, use the Choose default signature section to set when your signature is applied. You can select it for New messages and Replies/forwards.

In the web app, under Automatically include my signature on new messages that I compose and Automatically include my signature on messages I forward or reply to, check the boxes to apply your signature to all messages.

Manually Insert a Signature (Optional): If you prefer not to include your signature automatically, you can manually insert it. Simply click on Insert > Signature (desktop) or Insert signature in the message toolbar (web) to add it whenever needed.

Step 5: Save and Test Your Signature

Click OK in the desktop app or Save in the web app to apply your signature settings.

Send a Test Email: Open a new email, and check that your signature appears correctly. Send a test email to yourself to confirm that links and formatting are displaying properly.

Ever since the announcement for Windows 11, Microsoft has struggled to convince users to switch from Windows 10 to its newest operating system. As Windows 10 nears its end-of-life date in October 2025, Microsoft is introducing a lifeline for users who aren’t quite ready to switch: Extended Security Updates (ESU). This paid extension will offer an additional year of critical security updates, through to October 2026, aimed at protecting users who rely on Windows 10 for specific hardware or software compatibility reasons. The plan is primarily aimed at enterprise users, but Microsoft will also make it accessible for individual users, providing a little extra time to prepare for the eventual switch to Windows 11 or beyond.

Why Extend Windows 10?

Microsoft’s primary motivation is clear: many organizations and individuals still depend on Windows 10, and not all hardware is easily upgradeable to Windows 11’s requirements. While Windows 10 continues to function well for many users, Windows 11’s rollout has yet to be well received by users and organizations alike.

What Is the Cost of Extended Security for Windows 10?

The ESU option comes with a cost—at $30 USD per device for the additional year. This cost may seem minimal for individual users but can quickly add up for companies with numerous devices.

How Will Extended Security Updates Work?

The ESU package will deliver only security patches—no new features or enhancements. Critical vulnerabilities will continue to be addressed, giving organizations and users another year to plan their transition strategies. For enterprises, this could involve budget allocations, software audits, and phased upgrade rollouts to Windows 11 or alternative systems. For diehard Windows 10 enthusiasts who are just wanting to delay the switch, this gives them the opportunity to safely stay on their preferred operating system for an additional two years.

Organizations and individuals will have until October 2026 to migrate their systems to Windows 11 before Microsoft pulls the plug on safety releases for Windows 10. If you or your organization needs assistance upgrading your systems to newer operating systems, please contact us today. Our expert support technicians can help your business get onto fastest, more secure, and robust operating systems.

Microsoft Teams is a powerful collaboration tool that allows teams to communicate, collaborate, and share files seamlessly. Let’s explore how to share files in Teams in chat, channels, and meetings, as well as how to work on files in Teams without leaving the app.

Sharing Files in Chat

Sharing files in chat is simple in Teams. To share a file, start by opening a chat with the person or group you want to share the file with. Next, click on the paperclip icon in the message box to attach a file. You can then select a file from your computer or OneDrive, or you can drag and drop a file directly into the chat window.

Once you’ve attached the file, you can add a message to accompany it and click the send button to share it. The file will be uploaded to the chat and the recipient(s) will be able to download and view it.

Sharing Files in Channels

Channels are a great way to organize conversations and collaborate on specific topics. To share a file in a channel, start by navigating to the channel where you want to share the file. Next, click on the Files tab at the top of the channel to open the Files tab.

From here, you can either upload a new file or select an existing file from the channel’s shared files. To upload a new file, click on the Upload button and select the file from your computer or OneDrive. To select an existing file, simply click on the file to open it.

Once the file is uploaded or selected, you can add a message to accompany it and click the send button to share it with the channel members. The file will be added to the channel’s shared files and the members will be able to access it.

Sharing Files in Meetings

Meetings in Teams allow you to collaborate with your team members in real-time. To share a file in a meeting, start by joining the meeting and clicking on the Share content button in the meeting controls.

Next, select the file you want to share from your computer or OneDrive. You can then choose to share your entire screen, a specific window, or just the file itself.

Once you’ve selected the sharing option, click on the Share button to share the file with the meeting participants. The file will be displayed on the meeting screen and participants will be able to view it.

Working on Files in Teams

One of the great features of Teams is that you can work on files without leaving the app. To do this, simply click on the file you want to work on in a chat, channel, or meeting. The file will open in the Teams app and you’ll be able to edit it using the familiar Office tools.

When you’re done editing the file, simply save it and it will be automatically updated in the chat, channel, or meeting. This makes collaborating on files in Teams seamless and efficient.

In conclusion, sharing files in Teams is easy and efficient. Whether you’re sharing files in chat, channels, or meetings, or working on files without leaving the app, Teams has you covered. By using these features, you can collaborate with your team members more effectively and get work done faster.
Written by: Jay H.

If you’re using Office 2013, you may have run into your Outlook application asking you to sign in over and over again, even when you enter the right credentials. This issue is annoying at best, but if you depend on emails for your work, it can halt and hinder your productivity. Luckily, you can fix this issue in just a few steps. Here’s how to fix Outlook 2013 asking for your password over and over again.

Why does Outlook keep asking for my password?

In this particular instance, Outlook may be repeatedly asking you for your password because you’ve recently enabled multi-factor authentication (MFA). While MFA is an excellent security tool, unfortunately, enabling it requires an additional step in Office 2013: turning on something called Modern authentication. We can do so in a few steps.

How to enable Modern authentication in Office 2013

Now, let’s go over how you can stop Outlook from persistently pestering you for your password!

Click on the search bar in the taskbar, then type and click on Notepad.

In the new window, copy and paste the following text:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Exchange]

“AlwaysUseMSOAuthForAutoDiscover”=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\Identity]

“EnableADAL”=dword:00000001

“Version”=dword:00000001

On your keyboard, click Ctrl + S. In the new window, delete all of the text in the File name input, including the .txt extension. Replace it with Office2013_Enable_ModernAuth.reg. Save it somewhere that’s easy for you to find it, like your Desktop or Documents folders. If you get a prompt about the file becoming unusable, confirm your save.

Open File Explorer, then navigate to the location where you just saved the file. Double-click on it to open it.

In the dialogue box, click Yes to permit the application to make changes to your device.

In the Registry Editor warning window, click Yes to accept the changes.

Close Outlook, then reopen it and sign out and sign back into your Office account.

If you’re troubleshooting an issue with your computer, oftentimes you may want to boot your computer into safe mode. Safe mode starts Windows in a basic state with limited drivers and files, meaning that if a problem doesn’t occur in safe mode, it is not the default configuration that is causing your issues.
How to boot into safe mode in Windows 10 or Windows 11

Microsoft recently unveiled Windows 11 version 2H22, sporting new improvements and a few new features. Let’s look at what’s new with this version of Windows and how you can update if you’re interested in trying it out for yourself.

Windows 11 2H22 Features

Start Menu enhancements

Microsoft improved the Start Menu, now allowing you to customize the Recommended section. The new settings enable you to choose between showing more pins, more recommendations, or the default split view.

Source: Microsoft

Another big Start Menu feature is folders. You can now drag an app on top of another to create a folder, allowing you to group similar apps and better organize your menu. You can also reorganize and rename folders and remove apps from them.

Taskbar changes

Microsoft finally restored the drag-and-drop capability, letting you drag files onto apps pinned in the taskbar or drag apps to the taskbar to create shortcuts.

Additionally, while hovering the volume icon in the taskbar, you can now adjust the volume by scrolling your mouse wheel.

You also have the ability to share a window from the taskbar on apps such as Microsoft Teams. To use this feature, go into Settings > Personalization > Taskbar and ensure that Share any window from my taskbar is enabled.

This version also introduces the taskbar overflow functionality, making it easier to switch between apps when you don’t have space in the taskbar. This feature provides an entry point into a new overflow menu that lists the excess apps and supports many taskbar behaviours like pinned apps.

Task Manager

2H22 also enhanced Task Manager, giving it a new, modern design and a navigation bar. It also includes a new Efficiency mode that will reduce the consumption of resource-intensitive apps if you need to prioritize other apps or conserve battery life.

To apply Efficiency mode to an app, right-click on it within Task Manager and select Efficiency mode. If the option is greyed out, the app is likely a core Windows process that cannot be throttled.

File Explorer

File Explorer finally has support for tabs in Windows 11 version 2H22.

With this feature, you’ll be able to easily manage folders similar to how you manage multiple tabs in your web browser. This eliminates the need to open new windows for each folder, improving your productivity.

Memory integrity

Microsoft developed Memory integrity to prevent attackers from inserting malicious code into high-priority processes. You can enable this feature in Windows Security under Device security > Core isolation if your device has newer hardware.

How to get this update

If you’re interested in updating to Windows 11 version 2H22 and you already have Windows 11, simply go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates. It will search for and download the updates, then you’ll have to restart your computer to apply the upgrade. If you run into any trouble updating, contact us today.
