Written by: Jay H.

A slow internet connection can be one of the most frustrating problems to deal with whether you’re working from home, streaming a movie, or just browsing the web. Pages load slowly, videos buffer endlessly, and everything takes longer than it should. If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Why is my internet so slow?”, you’re not alone.

Let’s break down the possible causes of slow internet, how to test your current speed, and what you can do to fix it.

Step 1: Test Your Internet Speed

Before making any changes, it’s important to get a clear picture of your current connection.

How to Run a Speed Test

Visit a reputable speed test website such as fast.com. The test will start running immediately for your download speed. Once it finishes, click on Show more info to get your upload speed.

What the Numbers Mean

Download speed – Affects things like streaming, browsing, and downloads.

Upload speed – Important for video calls, file uploads, and online gaming.

Ping (ms) – Measures delay. Lower is better; high ping can make your connection feel laggy.

Compare your results with the speeds promised by your internet provider by checking your online account or an invoice. If you’re paying for 100 Mbps but only getting 15 Mbps, something’s off.

Common Reasons for Slow Internet

1. Too Many Devices Connected

Every device on your network uses a slice of your bandwidth. Phones, smart TVs, gaming consoles, and even smart home gadgets can add up. If too many are active at once, everything slows down.

Fix: Disconnect unused devices or upgrade your internet plan if you have a large household.

2. Weak Wi-Fi Signal

The farther away you are from your router, the weaker the signal. Walls, furniture, and other electronics can also interfere. If possible, always use a wired (ethernet) connection over a wireless connection as they are more reliable and provide better speeds.

Fix: Move closer to your router or consider getting a mesh Wi-Fi system or signal extender to improve coverage. Use a wired connection if possible.

3. Outdated Equipment

Old routers and modems may not support faster speeds, especially if you’ve upgraded your plan but kept the same hardware.

Fix: Upgrade to a modern router that supports current Wi-Fi standards (look for dual-band or Wi-Fi 6 models).

4. Your Internet Plan Isn’t Fast Enough

If you’re consistently hitting the maximum of what your plan offers, you may simply need a faster package.

Fix: Check your plan’s speed and consider upgrading if your needs have increased, especially if you work from home, game, or stream videos.

7. ISP Issues

Sometimes the problem isn’t you, it’s your provider. Outages, maintenance, or technical issues at their end can reduce your speeds.

Fix: Check your provider’s website or social media for updates. If the issue persists, contact their support team.

Boost your Internet Speed

A slow internet connection doesn’t always mean you need a new provider. Often, it’s caused by minor issues that you can fix yourself. By testing your speed and working through the common culprits, you can enjoy a faster, smoother online experience.

Few things are more frustrating than pressing your power button and… nothing happens. No lights, no fans, no startup sounds—just silence. Whether you’re using a desktop or a laptop, a computer that won’t turn on can feel like a disaster, especially if you rely on it for work, school, or personal files.

Before you panic or assume the worst, there are several steps you can take to diagnose the issue. Many power problems have simple fixes. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you figure out what’s wrong and what you can do to get back up and running.

1. Check the Power Source

It sounds obvious, but it’s worth double-checking before anything else. Before assuming something is seriously wrong with your computer, start with the basics: make sure it’s actually receiving power. Many no-start issues are caused by loose cables, faulty outlets, or a simple power strip failure.

For Desktop Computers

Check the power cable
Ensure the power cord is securely plugged into both the back of your computer and a working wall outlet or surge protector. A loose connection is more common than you’d think.

Test the outlet
Try plugging another device, like a phone charger or lamp, into the same outlet to confirm it’s delivering power. If it doesn’t work, try a different outlet.

Inspect the power supply switch
On some desktops, there’s a small power switch on the back of the power supply unit. Make sure it’s switched to the “on” position.

Try another power bar or plug directly into the wall
Power strips can fail silently, even if their indicator light is on. To rule this out, bypass the power bar and plug your PC directly into the wall.

For Laptops

Connect the charger
Plug in your laptop charger and look for signs that it’s charging, like LED lights near the charging port or an on-screen battery icon.

Try another outlet
If there are no signs of life, move to another outlet just in case the one you’re using is faulty.

Test with another charger
If possible, try a different compatible charger. The problem might not be the laptop at all, it could be the charging cable or adapter.

2. Look for Signs of Life

Just because your screen stays black doesn’t always mean your computer is completely dead. Sometimes, your system may be receiving power but failing to boot properly. That’s why it’s important to look and listen for any signs that something is happening under the hood.

Check for Visual Indicators

Start by pressing the power button and observing the computer closely:

Power button lights up
Some devices have LED lights built into the power button or around the keyboard. If these light up, your computer is likely receiving power.

Keyboard backlighting
On laptops or desktops with backlit keyboards, lighting may briefly turn on when the system attempts to start.

Charging indicators
For laptops, a charging light near the power port or on the side of the device often confirms that it’s receiving power, even if the screen is blank.

Listen for Audible Clues

Sound is another helpful diagnostic tool. As your computer attempts to boot, listen for:

Whirring fans
If you hear fans spinning, that means power is reaching the internal components, but the system might be stuck in the boot process.

Hard drive or startup noises
Older computers with spinning hard drives often make faint clicking or spinning sounds when starting up.

Beeping noises
Some desktops emit beeps when something is wrong during startup. These POST (Power-On Self-Test) beeps indicate hardware issues like bad RAM or a missing component. The pattern and number of beeps can help you pinpoint the problem (you can look these up on your computer manufacturer’s website).

3. Try a Hard Reset

If your computer is getting power—maybe the lights come on or the fans spin—but it still won’t start properly, it could be stuck due to a minor system glitch or hardware hiccup. In many cases, performing a hard reset can help clear out that temporary problem and allow your system to start fresh.

A hard reset essentially drains any remaining electrical charge from the computer and forces all internal components to fully power off. This can resolve issues related to unresponsive hardware, sleep mode malfunctions, or incomplete shutdowns.

How to Perform a Hard Reset on a Laptop

Disconnect the power
Unplug the charger from your laptop to ensure no electricity is flowing into the device.

Remove the battery (if it’s removable)
If your laptop has a removable battery, take it out. For newer laptops with built-in batteries, you can skip this step.

7. Disconnect All External Devices

A malfunctioning USB device, printer, or external hard drive can occasionally prevent startup. Unplug everything from your computer (except for the monitor, keyboard, and mouse if it’s a desktop). Try powering it on again. If it works, reconnect devices one by one to identify the problem device.

8. Check for Internal Hardware Issues (Advanced)

Written by: Jay H.

When it comes to protecting your business data, automatic backups are essential. Unexpected events like cyberattacks, hardware failures, or accidental deletions can strike at any time. Without a backup, you risk losing critical files that could impact your operations, customer service, and reputation.

At Design2Web IT, we provide IT support to Abbotsford businesses and understand the importance of data security. In this blog, we’ll explain how you can set up automatic backups to keep your files safe and give your business peace of mind.

Why Automatic Backups Are Important

Backing up your business files regularly ensures you always have a copy of your important data. Automatic backups are particularly useful because they:

Save time by running in the background without manual input.

Protect against human error, like forgetting to back up files.

Minimize downtime in case of data loss by allowing quick recovery.

Now, let’s look at how to set up automatic backups, step by step.

Option 1: Back Up Files Using Windows or Mac Built-In Tools

Steps to Set Up Windows Backups

If you want to backup files to an external drive, USB, or network location on Windows, you can use Windows’ built-in backup tool.

Connect an External Drive

Plug in an external hard drive or USB or ensure you have access to a network storage location (like a server).

Open Backup Settings

Click the Start menu and go to Settings > Update & Security > Files backup.

Under Backup using File History, click Add a drive.

Select Your Backup Drive

Choose your external drive or network location. Windows will automatically start backing up your files.

Set Up Backup Frequency

Click More options to adjust how often the backup runs (e.g., every hour) and which folders to back up. If you are using an external device, ensure it remains plugged in to your computer to automatically back up.

Step to Set Up Mac Backups

For Mac users, Time Machine is the built-in backup solution that automatically saves your files to an external drive.

1. Connect an External Drive

Plug in an external hard drive or USB drive.

You may see a prompt asking if you want to use this drive for Time Machine backups—click Use as Backup Disk.

2. Open Time Machine Settings

Click the Apple menu and go to System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS versions).

Select Time Machine.

3. Select Your Backup Disk

Click Add Backup Disk and choose your external drive.

Click Use Disk to confirm.

4. Set Up Backup Frequency

Time Machine automatically backs up your files hourly, daily, and weekly.

You can click Options to exclude unnecessary folders.

5. Let the Backup Complete

Your first backup may take some time.

Future backups will be incremental, meaning only new and changed files are saved. Ensure your drive remains plugged in to your computer to run the automatic backups.

Option 2: Cloud Backup Solutions

While local backups are useful, they can be vulnerable to theft, fire, or hardware failure. That’s why many businesses prefer cloud-based backups, which store your data securely off-site.

Popular cloud backup solutions include:

Microsoft OneDrive (included with Microsoft 365 subscriptions)

Google Drive

Dropbox

Dedicated backup services like Acronis or Backblaze

How To Set Up Automatic Cloud Backups (Using OneDrive)

Sign In to OneDrive

Open the OneDrive app on your computer and sign in with your Microsoft account.

Choose Folders to Back Up

Right-click the OneDrive icon in your taskbar and select Settings.

Go to the Backup tab and click Manage backup.

Choose which folders (e.g., Documents, Desktop) to back up automatically.

Enable Automatic Sync

Once set up, OneDrive will automatically sync and back up your files to the cloud in real time. You can also access these files from any device.

Best Practices for Business Backups

To ensure your backups are effective, follow these tips:

Follow the 3-2-1 Rule: Keep 3 copies of your data (one primary and two backups), store them on 2 different types of media (like an external drive and the cloud), and keep 1 backup off-site.

Test Your Backups Regularly: Check that you can restore files from your backup to ensure it’s working properly.

Encrypt Your Backups: This adds an extra layer of security, especially for sensitive business data.

Set Backup Schedules Outside Work Hours: This prevents backups from slowing down your system during peak business hours.

2. Keep Your Operating System and Software Up to Date

Regular updates patch vulnerabilities that cybercriminals exploit. Ensure you regularly update your operating system and software to have the latest defences against cyber threats.

How to Update Windows:

Click the Start button, then select Settings (the gear icon).

Go to Update & Security, then select Windows Update.

Click on Check for updates. If updates are available, Windows will download and install them automatically.

Restart your computer when prompted to complete the installation.

How to Update macOS:

Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen.

Choose System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS versions).

Restart your Mac when prompted to finalize the update.

3. Be Careful with Email Attachments and Links

Email remains one of the most common ways that viruses and malware spread. Phishing attacks often arrive disguised as legitimate messages, tricking users into clicking harmful links or downloading malicious attachments. Even one careless click can give hackers access to your files, passwords, or personal data.

To stay safe:

Don’t open email attachments from unknown senders.

Always hover your mouse over links before clicking to check where they lead.

Look for common phishing signs like spelling mistakes or unexpected urgent messages.

4. Enable a Firewall

A firewall acts as a digital barrier between your device and the internet, monitoring incoming and outgoing traffic and blocking anything suspicious. It’s a simple but powerful tool that often gets overlooked.

Both Windows and macOS come with built-in firewalls. Make sure yours is turned on by checking your system settings. For added protection, especially on business networks, a hardware firewall or managed firewall solution can provide more granular control and logging. Occasionally review your firewall settings to ensure nothing has been disabled or altered without your knowledge.

5. Regularly Back Up Your Data

Even with the best defenses, no system is completely immune to threats. That’s why backing up your important files is critical. If your system becomes infected or damaged, having a backup ensures you don’t lose valuable data.

Use cloud services like OneDrive, Google Drive, or Dropbox for automatic, off-site backups. For added peace of mind, consider also keeping backups on external hard drives using backup tools.

6. Be Cautious on Public Wi-Fi

Public Wi-Fi networks, like those in cafés, airports, or hotels, are convenient, but they’re often unsecured. This makes them a prime target for hackers who can intercept your connection and steal passwords, files, or personal information.

To protect yourself, avoid accessing sensitive information such as banking or email accounts while on public Wi-Fi. Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to encrypt your internet connection, making it much harder for attackers to intercept your data. Also, stick to websites that use HTTPS (look for the padlock in your browser). Finally, turn off file sharing, Bluetooth, and automatic Wi-Fi connections to minimize exposure.

7. Watch Out for Fake Pop-ups and Warnings

Cybercriminals often use fake pop-up ads or warning messages to trick users into downloading harmful software. These may look like system alerts or antivirus notifications, but they’re designed to scare you into clicking.

Never trust a pop-up that suddenly appears telling you your computer is infected, especially if it urges you to download a program immediately. Instead, close the window using the taskbar or Task Manager. Only trust alerts that come from the antivirus software you personally installed.

8. Educate Yourself and Others

Cybersecurity isn’t just about tools; it’s about awareness. Understanding how threats work and how to recognize them is one of the best ways to stay protected.

Make a habit of reading trusted tech blogs or security websites to stay informed about new scams and attack trends. If you manage a team or have family members who are less tech-savvy, take time to educate them on basic security practices. The more people in your network who are aware, the safer everyone becomes.

What If You Suspect an Infection?

If your computer suddenly slows down, crashes, or behaves strangely, it could be infected with malware. The best course of action is to disconnect from the internet immediately to prevent the threat from spreading or sending data.

Next, run a full system scan using your antivirus software. If you’re unsure how to proceed or the problem persists, contact a trusted IT professional. Prompt action can minimize damage and protect your information.

Protect Your Devices from Cyberthreats

By following these simple, proactive steps, you can greatly reduce your risk of malware infections and security breaches. Cyber threats are always evolving, but so are the tools and strategies to fight them. Good habits, combined with the right technology, are your best defense in staying secure, whether you’re working from home, at the office, or on the go.

Written by: Jay H.

Running out of hard drive space can significantly slow down your computer, impact performance, and make it challenging to save new files or install software. Whether you’re working with limited storage or just want a more efficient system, managing and freeing up space on your hard drive can make a big difference. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you declutter your drive and optimise storage.

Why Freeing Up Drive Space is Important

When your drive is full, your computer has to work harder to locate and organise data, which can cause performance issues like slow startup times, lag, and system crashes. By freeing up space, you’re making more room for essential files, programs, and system operations that keep your computer running smoothly.

How to Free Up Disk Space

Check Your Storage Space

First, it’s helpful to understand where your space is being used so you can target areas that need the most attention.

Windows:

Go to Settings > System > Storage.

Here, you’ll see a breakdown of how your hard drive is being used by categories like Documents, Photos, and Apps.

macOS:

Go to Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage.

This section provides a visual overview of your storage use, so you can quickly see what’s taking up the most space.

Use Built-in Tools to Free Up Space

Both Windows and macOS offer built-in tools that can automatically clean up unnecessary files.

Windows Disk Cleanup Tool

Search for Disk Cleanup in the Windows search bar and open the tool.

Select the drive you want to clean up (usually C: for most users).

The tool will scan for temporary files, system cache, and other unneeded files.

Review the list, check the boxes of items you want to delete (like Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin), and click OK to free up space.

macOS Storage Management Tool

Go to Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage > Manage.

Here, you’ll find options like Store in iCloud (which moves files to iCloud), Optimize Storage (removes iTunes movies and TV shows you’ve already watched), and Empty Trash Automatically.

Select each option and enable it based on your storage needs.

Uninstall Unnecessary Applications

Over time, software and apps you no longer use can build up, occupying valuable space on your hard drive.

Windows:

Go to Settings > Apps > Apps & features.

Click on the apps you no longer need, then select Uninstall.

If prompted in a dialog box, continue to uninstall the program until it has been removed.

macOS:

Open Finder and go to Applications.

Drag any unnecessary apps into the Trash and empty the trash to free up space.

Clear Out Your Downloads Folder

Downloads can quickly pile up and go unnoticed. Files like installers, PDFs, and media that you only needed temporarily might still be sitting there.

Open your Downloads folder.

Review the files and delete any items you no longer need.

Consider organising the remaining files into folders or moving them to an external drive if they’re important.

Move Large Files to External Storage or Cloud Storage

For larger files, such as videos, high-resolution photos, and extensive documents, consider moving them off your computer entirely.

External Drives: Transfer large files to an external hard drive to free up space on your computer. This also serves as a backup.

Cloud Storage: Services like Google Drive, Dropbox, and iCloud provide storage that doesn’t occupy physical space on your computer, allowing you to access files from any device.

Use Storage-Saving Formats and Settings

If you work with media, try using compressed formats or settings to reduce file size without losing quality.

Photos: Use JPEG instead of PNG for photos unless you need transparency. On macOS, Preview allows you to resize images and save them in compressed formats.

Videos: Use software like HandBrake to compress video files without sacrificing quality.

Documents: Save Word documents in PDF format if they don’t require frequent editing, as PDFs can often take up less space.

Set Your Trash to Empty Automatically

Leaving files in the trash doesn’t free up space—they’re still stored on your hard drive. Setting your system to empty trash automatically can save you this step.

Windows:

Go to Settings > System > Storage, then click on Storage Sense and enable it to automatically empty your recycle bin based on your preferences.

macOS:

Go to Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage > Manage, and turn on Empty Trash Automatically.

Start Managing Your Drive Space

Managing your hard drive space doesn’t have to be a hassle. With a combination of using built-in tools, deleting unnecessary files, and transferring large items to external or cloud storage, you can keep your computer performing at its best. Whether you’re aiming to free up space for a new project or improve system speed, these steps make it easier to create a streamlined, efficient workspace.

A slow website can frustrate users, hurt your SEO rankings, and even impact your sales or conversions. Speeding up your WordPress site not only improves user experience but also ensures better performance and higher visibility in search engines. Here’s how you can optimize your WordPress website for speed.

How to Speed Up Your WordPress Website

1. Choose a Reliable Hosting Provider

Your hosting service plays a crucial role in your website’s speed.

Basic web hosting plans often significantly limit bandwidth, which can lead to slower loading times and interruptions during high-traffic periods. A fast and reliable hosting environment ensures your website performs well under heavy traffic. Design2Web IT offers 100% managed web hosting for small and medium businesses. Whether you have simple website or a complex website with thousands of pages and multiple databases, we can host them for you. Our web hosting includes a Content Delivery Network (CDN) to boost your website’s loading speed across the world, as well as daily website and database backups.

Low-cost hosting plans may seem attractive, but they often compromise on speed, support, and uptime reliability. Investing in quality hosting such as Design2Web IT ensures faster response times, reduced downtime, and a smoother experience for your visitors.

2. Use a Lightweight Theme and Design

Heavy themes packed with unnecessary features can slow down your site. Choose a theme designed for speed, like Astra, GeneratePress, or Neve. These themes offer customisation without compromising performance.

Also, do not go overboard with complex layouts, animations, or design elements that add visual clutter but contribute little to functionality. A clean, minimalist design not only loads faster but also enhances user experience and navigability.

Stick to essential features and avoid excessive plugins or widgets that duplicate functionality already provided by your theme.

3. Optimise Images

Images often take up the bulk of a webpage’s load time. Compress your images using tools like TinyPNG, Imagify, or Smush. These plugins optimise images without reducing quality.

Also use the WebP format for smaller file sizes whether possible and set appropriate dimensions for images during uploads.

4. Implement Caching

Caching speeds up your site by storing a static version of your pages, reducing the load on your server and improving the loading speed for visitors. Install a caching plugin like:

WP Fastest Cache

W3 Total Cache

LiteSpeed Cache (if your hosting supports LiteSpeed servers)

These plugins simplify caching and help deliver content faster to your visitors.

5. Minify CSS, JavaScript, and HTML

Minifying reduces the size of your code by removing unnecessary spaces and comments. Plugins like Autoptimize or WP Rocket can handle this for you, improving loading speeds.

6. Use a Content Delivery Network (CDN)

A CDN stores copies of your site on servers around the world, delivering content from the server closest to your user. Cloudflare and Bunny.net are two popular CDN providers.

Design2Web IT provides a CDN with our web hosting plans to help your site deliver smoothly across the globe.

7. Optimize Your Database

Over time, your WordPress database accumulates unused data like post revisions, spam comments, and transients. Use plugins like WP-Optimize or Advanced Database Cleaner to clean and optimize your database regularly. However, always take a backup of your website and database before optimizing your database to ensure no data is lost.

8. Limit Plugins

Too many plugins can slow down your site and create security vulnerabilities. Audit your plugins regularly and remove those you no longer need to tighten your site’s security and reduce bloat. Also, use plugins from reputable developers to ensure the code’s quality.

9. Develop Your Site With a Mobile-First Approach

With the majority of web traffic coming from mobile devices, developing your site with a mobile-first approach is essential. Mobile-friendly websites are not only faster but also rank higher in search engine results.

Focus on creating a responsive design that adjusts seamlessly to different screen sizes. Use tools like Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test to ensure your site performs well across devices.

By optimising for mobile first, your site will deliver a faster, more enjoyable experience for users, regardless of their device.

10. Monitor Your Site’s Performance

Use tools like Google PageSpeed Insights or GTmetrix to identify bottlenecks and track improvements. These tools provide actionable recommendations to boost your site’s speed further.

Written by: Jay H.

When equipping your business with new IT hardware, deciding between custom PCs and prebuilt systems is a critical decision. Both options have their pros and cons, but understanding your business needs will help guide you toward the right choice. In this blog, we’ll explore the advantages and limitations of custom PCs and prebuilt systems, and why businesses in the Fraser Valley use our custom PC and server-building services.

Prebuilt Systems: The Convenience Factor

Prebuilt PCs are often the go-to option for businesses looking for quick and simple solutions. These systems come ready to use, with standardised components and pre-installed operating systems.

Advantages of Prebuilt PCs

Time-Saving: These computers require minimal setup time, making them ideal for businesses needing a quick replacement or expansion.

Support & Warranty: Many prebuilt PCs come with manufacturer warranties and customer support.

Standardisation: They offer consistency across multiple systems, which can simplify IT management.

Limitations of Prebuilt PCs

Lack of Flexibility: You’re limited to the specifications offered by the manufacturer, which might not suit your unique business needs.

Cost Efficiency: While the upfront cost might seem lower, you could end up paying more for features you don’t need or miss out on better-performing components.

Shorter Lifespan: Prebuilt systems often use generic components that may lack the durability and performance of higher-quality, custom-selected parts.

Custom PCs: Tailored to Your Needs

Custom-built PCs provide businesses with unparalleled flexibility and control over their hardware, making them a great choice for organisations with specific IT requirements.

Advantages of Custom PCs

Performance Optimisation: Tailor components like processors, RAM, and graphics cards to your specific workloads, ensuring maximum efficiency.

Cost Control: Only pay for what you need—no unnecessary features or software.

Future-Proofing: Choose upgradeable components, ensuring your systems stay relevant for years.

Reliability: High-quality parts reduce downtime and maintenance costs over the long term.

Limitations of Custom PCs

Longer Lead Time: Building and testing custom systems can take more time compared to buying prebuilt machines.

Initial Cost: While more cost-efficient in the long run, custom builds may require a higher upfront investment.

Knowledge Requirement: If you do not know how to build a computer or what components work with your chosen equipment, you will need to consult a computer-building expert like Design2Web IT for help.

The Case for Custom Servers

For businesses managing large volumes of data, custom servers are a game-changer. Unlike prebuilt servers, custom-built servers allow you to optimise storage, processing power, and redundancy for your specific needs. Whether you’re hosting websites, managing databases, or running virtual machines, a tailored server setup ensures scalability, reliability, and security.

Why Choose Custom Servers?

Scalability: Add or modify components as your business grows.

High Availability: Configure redundancy features to ensure minimal downtime.

Security: Implement tailored security protocols to protect sensitive data.

Why Businesses in the Fraser Valley Choose Us

At Design2Web IT, we specialise in building custom PCs and servers for businesses across the Fraser Valley. Our team works closely with you to understand your needs, ensuring your systems are designed for performance, reliability, and cost-efficiency.

Written by: Jay H.

System Restore is a useful tool in Windows that helps you revert your computer’s system files, settings, and applications to a previous state. If you’re experiencing unexpected errors or performance issues, using System Restore can often fix them without affecting your personal files. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about System Restore, from setting it up to restoring your system.

What Is System Restore?

System Restore is a Windows feature that creates “restore points” — snapshots of your system’s configuration at a particular point in time. Restore points save system files, installed applications, Windows Registry settings, and system settings. When something goes wrong, such as a problematic update or software installation, you can revert to one of these restore points, effectively undoing the recent changes that caused issues.

When Should You Use System Restore?

System Restore is useful in several situations, including:

After installing new software or hardware that’s causing errors.

Following a Windows update that has led to system instability.

When experiencing crashes, freezes, or unexpected shutdowns.

When dealing with corrupted system files or configuration issues.

How to Set Up System Restore

To use System Restore, it needs to be enabled first. Here’s how to check if it’s enabled on your Windows computer and set it up if it isn’t.

1. Open System Protection

Right-click the Start button and select System.

In the System window, click System Protection on the left-hand side.

2. Enable System Protection

In the System Protection tab, you’ll see a list of drives with a Protection status.

If Protection is set to Off for your main drive (usually C:), select the drive and click Configure.

In the Configure menu, select Turn on system protection and adjust the Max Usage slider to set the amount of disk space for restore points.

Click Apply and then OK to save changes.

3. Create a Restore Point

Although Windows automatically creates restore points, you can create one manually.

In the System Protection tab, click Create and give your restore point a descriptive name, like “Before Driver Update.”

Click Create again, and wait for the restore point to be generated.

How to Use System Restore to Revert Your System

If an error occurs, follow these steps to revert your system using System Restore.

Step 1: Open System Restore

Open the Start menu, type System Restore, and select Create a restore point.

In the System Properties window, click System Restore.

Step 2: Choose a Restore Point

In the System Restore window, click Next to see a list of available restore points.

Select a restore point from a date when your system was functioning properly.

If available, select Show more restore points to see older options.

Click Next after choosing your preferred restore point.

Step 3: Confirm Restore Point

Review the details of the selected restore point and click Finish to confirm.

Windows will restart your computer to apply the changes, which may take several minutes.

Step 4: Wait for the Process to Complete

After your computer restarts, you’ll see a message confirming that the restore was successful or failed. If successful, your system settings will be rolled back to the selected date, potentially resolving the error.

Advanced Options and Tips for System Restore

Undoing a System Restore

If the restore doesn’t fix the issue or creates new problems, you can undo it by returning to System Restore and selecting Undo System Restore. This will revert your system to its previous state before the restoration.

Choosing Restore Points Wisely

If multiple restore points are available, choose the one closest to when your system was stable, but before any problematic changes were made. Each restore point will show the date, time, and a description, which can help you identify the best option.

Running System Restore in Safe Mode

If Windows won’t start normally, you can run System Restore in Safe Mode:

Restart your computer and press F8 (or Shift + F8) repeatedly during startup.

Choose Safe Mode from the Advanced Boot Options.

Once in Safe Mode, follow the same steps to access and run System Restore.

Using Command Prompt for System Restore

If you cannot access Windows normally or through Safe Mode, you can perform a restore via Command Prompt:

Boot into the Windows Recovery Environment by pressing F8 on startup or using a Windows installation media.

Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.

In Command Prompt, type
rstrui.exe
and press Enter. This will open System Restore, allowing you to select a restore point.

Things to Keep in Mind

System Restore won’t delete your personal files (documents, photos, etc.), but it will remove software and updates installed after the restore point date.

System Restore doesn’t fix malware. If you suspect a virus or malware, use antivirus software to scan and clean your computer.

Restore points are automatically deleted if you run low on disk space, so it’s a good idea to check that System Protection is active periodically.

Get Your System in Working Order

System Restore is a valuable tool that can save you from complex troubleshooting steps and give you peace of mind. By following these instructions, you can roll back unwanted changes and restore stability to your system with ease.
