Few things are more frustrating than pressing your power button and… nothing happens. No lights, no fans, no startup sounds—just silence. Whether you’re using a desktop or a laptop, a computer that won’t turn on can feel like a disaster, especially if you rely on it for work, school, or personal files.

Before you panic or assume the worst, there are several steps you can take to diagnose the issue. Many power problems have simple fixes. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you figure out what’s wrong and what you can do to get back up and running.

1. Check the Power Source

It sounds obvious, but it’s worth double-checking before anything else. Before assuming something is seriously wrong with your computer, start with the basics: make sure it’s actually receiving power. Many no-start issues are caused by loose cables, faulty outlets, or a simple power strip failure.

For Desktop Computers

Check the power cable
Ensure the power cord is securely plugged into both the back of your computer and a working wall outlet or surge protector. A loose connection is more common than you’d think.

Test the outlet
Try plugging another device, like a phone charger or lamp, into the same outlet to confirm it’s delivering power. If it doesn’t work, try a different outlet.

Inspect the power supply switch
On some desktops, there’s a small power switch on the back of the power supply unit. Make sure it’s switched to the “on” position.

Try another power bar or plug directly into the wall
Power strips can fail silently, even if their indicator light is on. To rule this out, bypass the power bar and plug your PC directly into the wall.

For Laptops

Connect the charger
Plug in your laptop charger and look for signs that it’s charging, like LED lights near the charging port or an on-screen battery icon.

Try another outlet
If there are no signs of life, move to another outlet just in case the one you’re using is faulty.

Test with another charger
If possible, try a different compatible charger. The problem might not be the laptop at all, it could be the charging cable or adapter.

2. Look for Signs of Life

Just because your screen stays black doesn’t always mean your computer is completely dead. Sometimes, your system may be receiving power but failing to boot properly. That’s why it’s important to look and listen for any signs that something is happening under the hood.

Check for Visual Indicators

Start by pressing the power button and observing the computer closely:

Power button lights up
Some devices have LED lights built into the power button or around the keyboard. If these light up, your computer is likely receiving power.

Keyboard backlighting
On laptops or desktops with backlit keyboards, lighting may briefly turn on when the system attempts to start.

Charging indicators
For laptops, a charging light near the power port or on the side of the device often confirms that it’s receiving power, even if the screen is blank.

Listen for Audible Clues

Sound is another helpful diagnostic tool. As your computer attempts to boot, listen for:

Whirring fans
If you hear fans spinning, that means power is reaching the internal components, but the system might be stuck in the boot process.

Hard drive or startup noises
Older computers with spinning hard drives often make faint clicking or spinning sounds when starting up.

Beeping noises
Some desktops emit beeps when something is wrong during startup. These POST (Power-On Self-Test) beeps indicate hardware issues like bad RAM or a missing component. The pattern and number of beeps can help you pinpoint the problem (you can look these up on your computer manufacturer’s website).

3. Try a Hard Reset

If your computer is getting power—maybe the lights come on or the fans spin—but it still won’t start properly, it could be stuck due to a minor system glitch or hardware hiccup. In many cases, performing a hard reset can help clear out that temporary problem and allow your system to start fresh.

A hard reset essentially drains any remaining electrical charge from the computer and forces all internal components to fully power off. This can resolve issues related to unresponsive hardware, sleep mode malfunctions, or incomplete shutdowns.

How to Perform a Hard Reset on a Laptop

Disconnect the power
Unplug the charger from your laptop to ensure no electricity is flowing into the device.

Remove the battery (if it’s removable)
If your laptop has a removable battery, take it out. For newer laptops with built-in batteries, you can skip this step.

Hold the power button
Press and hold the power button for 15 to 20 seconds. This helps discharge any lingering power from internal components.

Reconnect and restart
Reinsert the battery (if you removed it), plug the charger back in, and try turning the laptop on again.

Note: If your laptop has a built-in battery that you can’t remove, just hold the power button down for a longer period—sometimes up to 30 seconds—and then try turning it back on.

How to Perform a Hard Reset on a Desktop

Unplug the computer
Disconnect the power cable completely from the wall and the computer itself.

Discharge residual power
Press and hold the power button for 15 to 20 seconds. This releases any remaining charge inside the system.

Reconnect and restart
Plug the power cable back in and press the power button to see if the system starts up normally.

5. Listen for Beeping or Error Codes

Some computers will beep in specific patterns when there’s a hardware issue (like bad RAM or graphics card). These POST (Power-On Self-Test) beeps can help diagnose the issue. If you hear beeps, refer to your computer manufacturer’s website or manual to interpret them.

6. Test the Battery and Charger (Laptops Only)

A dead battery or faulty charger may prevent your laptop from turning on.

Try removing the battery entirely and powering the laptop with just the charger.

If it powers on, the battery may be the issue.

If not, the charger might be faulty—try a known working charger if available.

7. Disconnect All External Devices

A malfunctioning USB device, printer, or external hard drive can occasionally prevent startup. Unplug everything from your computer (except for the monitor, keyboard, and mouse if it’s a desktop). Try powering it on again. If it works, reconnect devices one by one to identify the problem device.

8. Check for Internal Hardware Issues (Advanced)

If you’re comfortable opening your desktop case:

Ensure all internal cables (like the power cable to the motherboard) are securely connected.

Reseat RAM sticks and make sure the graphics card (if applicable) is properly seated.

Look for any obvious damage, burns, or loose parts.

System Restore is a useful tool in Windows that helps you revert your computer’s system files, settings, and applications to a previous state. If you’re experiencing unexpected errors or performance issues, using System Restore can often fix them without affecting your personal files. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about System Restore, from setting it up to restoring your system.

What Is System Restore?

System Restore is a Windows feature that creates “restore points” — snapshots of your system’s configuration at a particular point in time. Restore points save system files, installed applications, Windows Registry settings, and system settings. When something goes wrong, such as a problematic update or software installation, you can revert to one of these restore points, effectively undoing the recent changes that caused issues.

When Should You Use System Restore?

System Restore is useful in several situations, including:

After installing new software or hardware that’s causing errors.

Following a Windows update that has led to system instability.

When experiencing crashes, freezes, or unexpected shutdowns.

When dealing with corrupted system files or configuration issues.

How to Set Up System Restore

To use System Restore, it needs to be enabled first. Here’s how to check if it’s enabled on your Windows computer and set it up if it isn’t.

1. Open System Protection

Right-click the Start button and select System.

In the System window, click System Protection on the left-hand side.

2. Enable System Protection

In the System Protection tab, you’ll see a list of drives with a Protection status.

If Protection is set to Off for your main drive (usually C:), select the drive and click Configure.

In the Configure menu, select Turn on system protection and adjust the Max Usage slider to set the amount of disk space for restore points.

Click Apply and then OK to save changes.

3. Create a Restore Point

Although Windows automatically creates restore points, you can create one manually.

In the System Protection tab, click Create and give your restore point a descriptive name, like “Before Driver Update.”

Click Create again, and wait for the restore point to be generated.

How to Use System Restore to Revert Your System

If an error occurs, follow these steps to revert your system using System Restore.

Step 1: Open System Restore

Open the Start menu, type System Restore, and select Create a restore point.

In the System Properties window, click System Restore.

Step 2: Choose a Restore Point

In the System Restore window, click Next to see a list of available restore points.

Select a restore point from a date when your system was functioning properly.

If available, select Show more restore points to see older options.

Click Next after choosing your preferred restore point.

Step 3: Confirm Restore Point

Review the details of the selected restore point and click Finish to confirm.

Windows will restart your computer to apply the changes, which may take several minutes.

Step 4: Wait for the Process to Complete

After your computer restarts, you’ll see a message confirming that the restore was successful or failed. If successful, your system settings will be rolled back to the selected date, potentially resolving the error.

Advanced Options and Tips for System Restore

Undoing a System Restore

If the restore doesn’t fix the issue or creates new problems, you can undo it by returning to System Restore and selecting Undo System Restore. This will revert your system to its previous state before the restoration.

Choosing Restore Points Wisely

If multiple restore points are available, choose the one closest to when your system was stable, but before any problematic changes were made. Each restore point will show the date, time, and a description, which can help you identify the best option.

Running System Restore in Safe Mode

If Windows won’t start normally, you can run System Restore in Safe Mode:

Restart your computer and press F8 (or Shift + F8) repeatedly during startup.

Choose Safe Mode from the Advanced Boot Options.

Once in Safe Mode, follow the same steps to access and run System Restore.

Using Command Prompt for System Restore

If you cannot access Windows normally or through Safe Mode, you can perform a restore via Command Prompt:

Boot into the Windows Recovery Environment by pressing F8 on startup or using a Windows installation media.

Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.

In Command Prompt, type
rstrui.exe
and press Enter. This will open System Restore, allowing you to select a restore point.

Things to Keep in Mind

System Restore won’t delete your personal files (documents, photos, etc.), but it will remove software and updates installed after the restore point date.

System Restore doesn’t fix malware. If you suspect a virus or malware, use antivirus software to scan and clean your computer.

Restore points are automatically deleted if you run low on disk space, so it’s a good idea to check that System Protection is active periodically.

Get Your System in Working Order

System Restore is a valuable tool that can save you from complex troubleshooting steps and give you peace of mind. By following these instructions, you can roll back unwanted changes and restore stability to your system with ease.

This feature is great for Windows users who want a quick fix to system issues, but it is an advanced feature.
Factory resetting a computer can be a great way to clear out unwanted files, restore system performance, or prepare the device for a new user. A factory reset wipes your computer’s data and restores it to its original settings, much like when you first purchased it. This guide will walk you through the process of factory resetting both Windows and macOS computers.

Why Factory Reset a Computer?

Before diving into the steps, here’s why a factory reset may be beneficial:

Troubleshooting Persistent Issues: If your computer has recurring software problems, such as freezing, crashing, or poor performance, a reset can help resolve these by restoring system stability.

Improving Performance: Over time, computers accumulate files, applications, and settings that can slow down performance. A factory reset removes this clutter.

Preparing for Resale or Donation: If you’re planning to give away or sell your computer, a factory reset ensures that all personal data is erased, protecting your privacy.

Note: A factory reset permanently erases all files and settings. Make sure to back up any important data before proceeding.

Step 1: Back Up Your Files

Before resetting, back up all essential files to an external hard drive, USB drive, or cloud storage (e.g., OneDrive or Google Drive). Factory resetting will erase everything, including installed programs and personal files.

Step 2: Access the Reset Option

Open Settings: Click the Start menu and select the Settings gear icon.

Go to Update & Security: In the Settings window, select Update & Security.

Select Recovery: From the left sidebar, choose Recovery.

Start the Reset: Under the Reset this PC section, click on Get started.

Step 3: Choose Reset Options

When you begin the reset process, you’ll have two options:

Keep my files: This option reinstalls Windows and removes all apps and settings but keeps your personal files.

Remove everything: This option deletes all files, apps, and settings, bringing your computer back to a completely clean state.

Tip: If you’re preparing the computer for a new user, select Remove everything for a full reset.

Step 4: Follow the Prompts

Confirm Reset Options: You’ll be asked to confirm your choice, and if you chose Remove everything, you’ll see an additional option to clean the drive.

Choose Clean Data (Optional): For added security, you can choose to Clean data instead of just removing files. This process takes longer but makes it harder to recover deleted files.

Begin the Reset: Click Next and then Reset to start the factory reset process.

Your computer will restart several times during this process. Once complete, it will boot up as a fresh Windows installation, allowing you to set it up as if it were new.

How to Factory Reset a Mac Computer

Step 1: Back Up Your Files

Use Time Machine (macOS’s built-in backup software) to save a copy of your files to an external drive, or back up files manually by transferring them to an external drive or cloud storage. Resetting a Mac will erase all files and settings.

Step 2: Sign Out of Accounts (Optional)

Signing out of accounts helps prevent any issues with apps that use your Apple ID.

Sign out of iCloud: Open System Preferences > Apple ID > Overview and click Sign Out.

Sign out of iMessage: Open Messages, select Messages > Preferences, go to the iMessage tab, and click Sign Out.

Sign out of iTunes: Open Music or Apple Music, go to Account > Sign Out.

Step 3: Restart in Recovery Mode

Shut Down the Mac: Click on the Apple menu in the top-left corner and select Shut Down.

Enter Recovery Mode: Turn on the Mac and immediately hold Command + R (or Command + Option + R for an internet recovery).

Select Disk Utility: In the macOS Utilities window, select Disk Utility.

Step 4: Erase the Hard Drive

Select Your Startup Disk: In Disk Utility, choose the main hard drive (often named Macintosh HD).

Click Erase: In the Disk Utility toolbar, select Erase. Choose APFS as the format for newer Macs or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for older systems.

Confirm Erase: Click Erase to wipe the disk. Once complete, close Disk Utility.

Step 5: Reinstall macOS

Return to macOS Utilities: After closing Disk Utility, select Reinstall macOS from the Utilities window.

Follow the Installation Prompts: Choose your hard drive and follow the prompts to install a fresh version of macOS.

When installation finishes, your Mac will restart as a new system, ready to be set up or handed over to a new user.

Get Expert Assistance for Your Tech Needs

Businesses everywhere depend on technology for daily operations. Everything from computers to phones to networks to servers needs management, or else business operations could grind to a halt if something goes wrong. However, many small-medium businesses do not have the resources to maintain their own IT and turn to a managed IT services provider to do it for them.

What Is A Managed IT Services Provider?

A managed IT services provider (MSP) offers its clients a variety of fully-managed IT services. For instance, an MSP may provide remote computer support, cybersecurity solutions to protect clients from cybercriminals, 24/7 monitoring and management of your devices, data backup and restoration, and much more. IT services providers are an invaluable asset to any organization due to the essential services they provide.

What Are The Benefits Of IT Services?

Managed IT services benefit small-medium businesses in many ways. The main benefits of IT services are:

Cost savings – an MSP provides IT services at a fraction of the cost of an in-house IT team.

24/7 availability – a proper MSP like Design2Web IT offers 24/7 availability, so they’ll be there for you even if your servers go down at 7:00 AM.

Essential services – Nowadays, your business’ technology cannot be an afterthought. An MSP provides essential services to ensure your IT and business remain up and running, saving you thousands in downtime.

Rapid response – Disaster can strike at any time, so your MSP should be able to respond quickly and provide support for your IT issues.

Proactive instead of reactive – Benjamin Franklin famously said, “An ounce of cure is worth a pound of prevention.” By having an MSP proactively handle your IT infrastructure, you save significant costs that occur when IT breaks or something goes wrong by preventing it from happening in the first place.

Written by: Jay H.

No matter what industry you work in, you likely deal with computers every day. And if your PC starts running into problems, it can quickly hinder your productivity and cause frustration. Luckily, there are steps you can take to resolve most common computer issues. Here are 5 common computer problems and their solutions.

1. Slow PC

We’re used to our devices loading almost instantaneously, and if your computer starts to slow down, it can be aggravating. If you have to wait long for programs to open, your PC to start up, or do anything on your computer, you’ll quickly become frustrated, and it will be difficult to get anything done.

Slow Computer Solution

Usually, a slow PC indicates that your device lacks the necessary hardware resources to function quickly. This means your programs consume too much of your RAM, CPU, or hard drive/SSD.

You can see which programs are using significant resources by right-clicking your Task Bar and clicking Task Manager. Then, click on the Performance tab and review the utilization for each category. If any of the percentages are at or near 100 percent, you’ll know that your programs are hogging resources. You should close unused programs and monitor for resource-hungry applications.

If your computer is still running slowly after closing all programs, it may be time for a computer upgrade. Ageing computers eventually slow down, so it may be near the end of its life if you have an older machine. If you’re interested in upgrading your computer, please contact us today to learn how we can build a custom PC that meets your requirements.

2. PC Won’t Turn On

If you press the power button on your PC and it doesn’t turn on, don’t panic. It doesn’t necessarily mean your machine is broken, and there are a few things you can try to restore functionality. Even in the event that your computer is inoperable, your data is likely safe.

Fix Computer Will Not Turn On

If your computer won’t turn on, you can try a couple of fixes. First, check that the power cord is plugged firmly into both the back of the computer and a power outlet. If that doesn’t solve your issue, then look for the power switch on the back of your computer. Make sure to flip it to the horizontal line (ON) and not the circle (OFF).

Should neither solution fix your computer problem, you may have a power supply issue or other hardware problem. Take it to your local computer repair company such as Design2Web IT to see if they can resolve the issue for you. Even if your computer is inoperable, they can likely recover the data from your hard drive or SSD.

3. Slow Internet

Mostly everything we do on our computers involves the internet, and if you’re experiencing a slow connection (or none at all), your productivity can screech to a halt. However, there are a few simple ways you can try speeding your internet up.

Fix Slow Internet

Internet problems either stem from something on your side or something on your internet service provider’s side.

You can try restarting your modem by unplugging the device for at least 30 seconds before plugging it back in. This is often enough to fix your slow internet, especially if it’s a recent issue.

If that doesn’t resolve your issue, you should check that the ethernet cable is plugged in correctly to both your PC and wall connection. The ethernet cable feeds the internet connection into your computer, and if it’s not plugged securely, you’ll have no connection at all.

If neither solution restores speeds up your internet, you may have to contact your internet service provider. It could be an issue on their side, including wiring, outages, or other problems. You may also be on a slow internet data plan that is inadequate for your use.

4. Printer Isn’t Working

Your printer may not be printing for several reasons, but you can take steps to rectify the situation.

Fix Printer Not Printing

First, check your printer screen to see if it’s displaying any warnings. If so, you may know what your problem is.

If not, there are a few things you can try. Check that there is enough paper loaded in the tray, your ink cartridges aren’t empty, your printer is connected to Wi-Fi or ethernet, or the USB cable is plugged in. If all of these pass your inspection, try restarting the printer.

If none of these solutions work, check for issues on your computer. You may have to reinstall your printer’s drivers and complete the setup on your computer. To find your printer’s drivers, google your printer’s model plus “driver”, i.e., “Brother HL-L3290CDW drivers.”

5. Peripherals Not Working

If your keyboard, mouse, speakers, microphone, or other peripherals aren’t working, they can completely hinder your productivity and cause significant hassles.

Fix Peripherals Not Working

First, check your device’s connection to ensure you’ve plugged them in correctly. You may have to try different USB ports on the front and back of your computer.

If the connection is not the issue, you can try reinstalling the device’s drivers. Sometimes, they fail and can cause your device to stop working.

You can check if your drivers are causing issues on Windows by clicking on the Start menu, then finding Device Manager. If you see an exclamation mark next to your device, it means Windows detects the device but it’s not working properly.

If you see the exclamation mark, you can try right-clicking on the device in Device Manager and updating the drivers from there. Should that not work, you can try right-clicking and uninstalling the drivers, then restarting your computer. Windows will reinstall the drivers once the computer restarts.

You may also be able to find the newest drivers for your device by looking on the manufacturer’s website.

Companies today understand the need for IT support to keep operations up and running. However, instead of depending on the most “computer-literate” person in the room or an in-house IT team, many organizations turn to managed IT service providers (MSPs) to handle their IT needs remotely. Here are some of the benefits you and your organization stand to gain from remote tech support:

Benefits Of Remote IT Support

1. Fast and Convenient

Remote IT support is a quick and convenient way to resolve technical issues. Instead of scheduling an on-site visit, technicians connect remotely to resolve issues quickly. In fact, we at Design2Web IT respond to requests immediately or within fifteen minutes. Then, we fix most problems remotely within minutes. Although some technical issues require an in-person visit, technicians can remotely resolve between 80% to 90%.

2. Cost-Effective

Employing an in-house technical support team is costly. With remote tech support provided by a managed IT service provider, you receive on-demand support at a flat and cost-effective rate. In fact, outsourcing your IT needs to an MSP delivers all of the benefits of total IT support at a lesser cost than an in-house team.

3. Flexible

Technology does not operate on a nine-to-five schedule. As such, issues can arise after hours, on the weekend, or during holidays. No matter when they occur, we provide remote tech support to resolve problems fast.

4. No Geographical Restrictions

Whether you’re situated in Abbotsford or elsewhere, as long as it has an internet connection, we can connect to any PC or server in the world. There are no geographical restrictions to remote tech support.

5. Proactive Monitoring and Maintenance

Using remote IT support, you receive proactive maintenance to fix issues before they become problems. Therefore, you save the time, cost, and headache that the problems could cost if they evolved into more significant issues.

Get Remote Tech Support

When dealing with tech issues, remote IT support is a fast and convenient solution for many organizations.

Discover the benefits of remote tech support from a managed IT service provider such as Design2Web IT.
Believe it or not, 2020 is coming to an end soon. This year is not one history will remember fondly, and many are eagerly awaiting the blank slate that 2021 will provide. Many businesses may have realized their current managed IT services provider (MSP) is not as adequate as expected and want to switch providers for the new year. So, how do you know that your choice is the right one for your organization? Consider the following factors when choosing an MSP for 2021:

Expertise

Your MSP needs to be knowledgeable in various IT fields, including cloud computing, cybersecurity, software development, and onsite and remote IT support. They also need to stay up-to-date on new cybersecurity and IT developments, especially considering cybercrime has been on the rise since the start of the COVID-19 global pandemic. Your MSP must be ahead of the curve, anticipate changes, and prepare for incidents.

Outstanding reputation

Your MSP should have an established reputation and a long list of happy clients. Check third-party websites for unbiased opinions to ensure that your chosen MSP successfully addressed their clients’ IT concerns.

Availability

Imagine that your critical business functions go offline, and your MSP is nowhere to be found. Nightmarish, right? That’s why you need an MSP who has 24/7 accessibility in case of emergencies. So, if something goes awry, your MSP can immediately work to rectify the situation and restore your business’s mission-critical assets. You can sleep soundly knowing your MSP has your back.

Cloud adoption

More and more businesses are embracing cloud technology. Cloud computing allows organizations to access data from anywhere and acts as a disaster recovery measure. Therefore, find an MSP who readily utilizes cloud technology and can show you how it can benefit your organization.

Commitment

An adequate MSP wants to build a long-term partnership between your organization and theirs. They show a genuine interest in your business and ask questions about your business’s vision and goals. Make sure the MSP you choose demonstrates a commitment to furthering your firm.

Choosing an MSP for 2021 and Beyond

As you can tell, the right MSP should satisfy several criteria to make sure they’re the right fit for your organization. Are you looking for an MSP who exceeds all of these factors? Consider contacting us today and see how we can serve your organization.

Computer viruses do more than only slow down your computer – they can impact your PC’s functions, download more malware, spread to other computers, and delete or steal your files. So, learn how to tell if your computer has a virus and how to prevent them from infecting your PC in the first place.

Types Of Malware

“Computer virus” is an umbrella term for a wide range of malware that infects your PC. According to cybersecurity company Kaspersky, here are the most common variants of malware:

Computer Viruses

Computer viruses are spread from machine to machine by downloads from websites, email attachments, and shared drives. So, their spread is dependent on people sharing them.

Worms

Unlike computer viruses, worms can replicate themselves without help from people. Once a worm breaches a computer, it will spread to any network it connects to through network vulnerabilities. A worm can quickly take over an entire system, and it usually steals or deletes personal files upon executing itself.

Adware and Spyware

Adware and spyware track your information, including browsing information and location data. Your data can be sold to third parties with no regard to how it will be used.

Ransomware

Ransomware is an ever-growing concern, especially in the business world. This malware encrypts your data with a key known only to the attackers, then demands a ransom for their release. If you refuse, your information is encrypted permanently.

Signs Of Computer Virus Infections

Although not all malware leaves clues of infection, some signs may indicate an infection:

Slow Operations

Reduced computer performance is one of the most common symptoms of a virus. If you have windows that take a long time to load or seemingly-random processes running, it could indicate a virus. However, if you have an older computer, your PC may be slowing because of its age. If that is the case, you may want to replace your machine.

Pop-Up Advertisements

Unexpected advertisements are a common sign of malware. Not only are they annoying and intrusive, but clicking on them may install further malware on your computer. So, never click on unwarranted pop-up advertisements, even if they promise to remove malware on your system.

If you’re being bothered by these pop-ups, follow these steps:

Windows users: Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete at the same time to quickly open Task Manager. Then, click on the process and close it.

Mac users: Click on the Apple menu in the top-left corner and select Force Quit on the process.

Do note that this does not remove the infection but only closes the pop-up.

Hijacked Email

If your email contacts start receiving emails or messages from your account asking them to download or click on suspicious links, you likely have a virus. If this happens, log out of your accounts and change your passwords. Make sure you have security measures in place for your accounts, such as strong passwords as well as two-factor authentication.

Crashes And Errors

If your programs or computer freeze or crash, odd error messages appear, or applications open and close themselves, you could have a virus.

Files and Folders Modified

Unexplained changes to your files and folders, such as deleted data or changed icons and contents, don’t happen on their own. These changes could be a sign of a malicious program lurking on your computer.

Browser Redirection To Websites

A prevalent sign of a virus is getting redirected to websites that you didn’t search. These websites often encourage you to download further malware and try to obtain your personal information. So, never click on any links on the website or download any files.

Protect Yourself Against Computer Viruses

Ideally, you want to prevent virus attacks before they happen. To do this, practice good cybersecurity hygiene, including:

Install antivirus software and firewall.

Keep your software up-to-date.

Keep your operating system updated.

Do not open emails from unknown senders.

Avoid clicking on suspicious links.

Download only reputable software.

Keep regular backups of data.

Take steps to protect your machines from viruses. At best, they slow down your computer and bombard you with annoying pop-ups, but at worst, the damage can be much more severe.

Now that you know how to tell if your computer has a virus, it’s important to take steps if you think your machine is infected. If you need help safely removing it, contact us for support.

The coronavirus has impacted all aspects of our lives, including cyberspace. Businesses were forced to quickly transition their workforces to remote environments, creating opportunities for cybercriminals to strike. As the pandemic continues into 2021, expectations are that these attacks will increase. In a report released by cyber threat intelligence provider Check Point Research, there are three projected areas of coronavirus cyberthreats in 2021:Â COVID-19-related developments; malware, privacy, and cyber-conflicts; and emerging 5G and IoT platforms.

Coronavirus-Related Developments

Securing the ‘next normal’:Â In 2021, the pandemic will still be impacting all aspects of our lives. However, the way it affects us will continuously change, and we will have to respond to those changes. Since we are continually responding to different impacts, we are not dealing with a ‘new normal,’ but rather a series of ‘next normals.’ So, businesses must secure their networks and cloud deployments to protect their data. All network points must be secure – including employees’ mobile devices, IoT devices, and clouds – to stop attacks from spreading. Cybersecurity talent is in shortage, so businesses must implement automated prevention to accomplish this.

Exploiting new developments:Â As news of vaccine developments and restrictions happens, hackers will exploit these in their phishing scams. Also, pharma companies developing vaccines will be targeted by cybercriminals.

Targeting remote students:Â Many schools and universities have turned to remote learning, and cybercriminals have followed them. This sector experienced a 30 percent increase in weekly cyberattacks during August, and cyberattacks against remote learning will continue in 2021.

Malware, Privacy, And Cyber-War

Double-extortion ransomware attacks:Â Double-extortion ransomware attacks sharply increased this year. These attacks involve hackers extracting sensitive data, then encrypting their victim’s databases. Then, the hacker demands a ransom or else threatens to publish the victim’s data. These types of attacks have been so disruptive that the FBI has softened its stance on ransomware, saying that businesses may want to evaluate paying the ransom in some cases.

Weaponizing deepfakes:Â Sophisticated techniques are weaponizing video and audio deepfakes. These fakes are used to sway opinions, manipulate stock prices, amongst other malicious acts. For example, earlier this year, malefactors released a deepfake video of the Belgian prime minister giving a speech linking COVID-19 to environmental damage. Alarmingly, many people thought this was real.

5G and IoT Platforms

5G data concerns:Â Devices connected by ever-growing 5G networks continuously collect data on their users, and this massive volume of data gives cybercriminals opportunities to attack. Examples provided by Check Point include medical devices collecting health data, car services monitoring users’ movements, and smart city applications collecting information about their residents. So without proper protections in place, this data is vulnerable to attacks from cybercriminals.

IoT device expansion:Â As 5G networks continue to grow, more connected IoT devices will expand also. So, as IoT devices lack proper security measures, weak links need to be secured.

In conclusion, there are many coronavirus cyber threats businesses will face in 2021. Organizations must take measures to protect themselves from becoming the next victim of these growing attacks.
